Does a strained exchange of visits spring from affection,

after so long a spell of hanging back and staying away?

Never will a trait of yours become fair

by forcing it, for affection is not hidden.

So desist—may I be your ransom—from deceiving reason

with signs that detract from your affection, and refrain.

For it is they that bent the bough of affection until

it nearly fell into disgrace, not through tenderness.

And I remain true to it, as you have known me; so do not be

ever anything but possessed of faithful affection.
