are her pleasure grounds, filling ear and eye!

to the song of those songstresses, the birds, before dawn.

And roam as far as the eye can see through her Dummar's thickets,

among the woodlands, at a verdant lookout.

O night of al-Safh, will you not return once more?

May your days be watered with pouring rain!

    And shorten your stride and pass through her Salihiyyah;

you will see palaces there rising above the stars,

where gardens unveil from their sumptuous mantles

cypress brides in embroidered, striped robes.

And recall the words of one whose musings kept

surpassing magic in splendid descriptions of her,

of beauty too subtle for thought to grasp!

Where the breeze strolls through her reaches,

    while the lush ban-tree pleads for tenderness at daybreak;

where the streams beneath the shade go on

flowing between swaying boughs and sloping ground.
