I say to a pampered, coquettish gazelle,

who toys with people's minds when he lowers his gaze:

“Beauty is yours—no, rather, beauty bears a kinship

to you, through which beauty has come to be loved.

So why not grant the eye some of beauty's alms,

so the finest reward would be yours for what you give in charity?”

He said, “And are its alms ever lawful

for your eye, in my view, while it fornicates and steals?”

Then he raised toward me the gaze of one drunk to overflowing,

whose eyelids droop with drowsiness as he speaks.
