بذات الغضا والآنسات الخرائِد
I yearn for those hills and familiar haunts
I yearn for those meadows and dwellings
at Dhat al-Ghada, and for the charming, shy maidens.
With the same greenness and gentle residents

يرنّ على غصن من الدَوْح مائِد
And I pine, while a tuneful dove coos,
And I sigh for the cooing of doves in the morning
ringing out on a swaying bough of the spreading trees.
Singing on a dawh branch laid for them

It has songs at dusk that have toyed
It has melodies in the evening that have toyed
with every lovesick heart, its reason unsteady.
With every whimsical and fanciful heart

Each of us has a body, pallid in separation,
We both have bodies growing pale in separation
held captive, and an eye kept utterly sleepless by love.
Hostage and an eye in love very sleepless

It reminds me of days when wishes were eagerly pursued
It reminds me of days when wishes were attained
swiftly, while fortune's eye was not asleep,
Lightly while the glance of fortune is not slumbering

on a lush, quivering meadow, and at a tryst
In a garden spraying and trysting
with life, cool beneath the arak tree's spreading boughs.
Where life is blissful with comfort and freshness

Ah, O Ibn Nu'man, whose loyalty is steadfast,
Oh Son of Nu'man, true to his pacts
and O absent one, whom we have always found present,
And oh absent one we have not seen but in visions

لرنّةِ مصدوع وقصة ناشد
by your good fortune, O son of the noblest, give ear
By your father, oh son of the most generous, revive
to a brokenhearted man's lament and a seeker's tale.
The song of the lovelorn and the tale of the passionate

By your life, is there a turning back, a return
By your life, is there any kindness or return
to our former life and those snares,
To our past life and those hunting grounds

and the sweetness of intimate talk, as though it were
And nice talk of purity as though it were
blossoms glistening with dew, in pairs and singly,
Flowers glistening in the early dawn and twilight

And a day on the hilltop and another
on the valley's bank, with its delightful watering places—
On the bank of the graceful flowing valley

youth's hunting grounds of delight—ah, for youth!
Hunting the company of youth - ah, the days of youth
And may rain greet the traces of those hunting grounds.
And greeting life by tracking those hunts
فإِنso if سمحgrants الدهرtime الخؤونtreacherous بمثلهاwith their like
فإِن سمح الدهر الخؤون بمثلها
فإِنيthen indeed I لماfor what يَسخوit is generous بهwith it غيرnot جاحدungrateful
فإِني لما يَسخو به غير جاحد
So if treacherous time grants their like,
If fate should allow the like of them
then I shall not be ungrateful for what it freely gives.
Then I'll not deny what it gives liberally
