بَكَرتْshe came early عليَّto me برنّةwith the cry of المُتحزّنِone in grief
And a wailing dove in the two valleys at dawn
With a slender and graceful figure in the valleys
Came early to me with the cry of one in grief.
The doleful maid awoke in me longing
تشكوshe laments وأسمعand I hear ماwhat تقولُshe says وأنْثَنيand I turn back
أشكوI lament وتسمعُand she hears ماwhat أقولُI say وتنثنيand she turns back
She laments, and I hear what she says, and I turn back;
She complains and I listen to her words and bend
I lament, and she hears what I say, and she turns back,
I complain and she listens to my words and bends

Until she imagined herself a son of Adam,
Until I imagined the soul of the son of Adam
Distraught there, and I fancied myself the dove.
Lost there while the dove left me
