ونديم طارحته بعض ما بي

ونديم طارحته بعض ما بي

من نزوعي إِلى لِقا الأحباب

من نزوعي إِلى لِقا الأحباب

And a boon companion—I shared with him some of what lay within me,

A friend of mine revealed to me some of what was inside me

Of my longing to meet dear friends.

Of my inclination to meet loved ones

قلت هبني منيَّته كان ماذا

قلت هبني منيَّته كان ماذا

يتمنى قال الصِبا والتصابي

يتمنى قال الصِبا والتصابي

I said, "Suppose I invited him to wish—what would

I said tell me what was his wish

He wish for?" He said, "Youth and youthful play."

He said youthfulness and the mornings of joy

قلت لِمْ قال ذاك باكورة العم

قلت لِمْ قال ذاك باكورة العم

ر وهذي معادن الأطراب

ر وهذي معادن الأطراب

I said, "Why?" He said, "That is life's first fruit,

I said why? He said that is the beginning of living

And this, the mines of delight."

And this is the essence of happiness

قلت هل غير ذين قال دواع

قلت هل غير ذين قال دواع

ي الأنس تقضي لكل أمر عجاب

ي الأنس تقضي لكل أمر عجاب

I said, "Anything besides these two?" He said, "The promptings

I said is there anything else? He said the reasons

Of conviviality call for every wondrous thing."

For companionship that fulfill every amazing matter

قلت شَنّفْ مسامعي وتمنى

قلت شَنّفْ مسامعي وتمنى

قال بنت الكروم وابن السحاب

قال بنت الكروم وابن السحاب

I said, "Adorn my ears, and make a wish."

I said explain it to me and he wished

He said, "The daughter of the vines and the son of the clouds."

For a daughter of vineyards and a son of clouds

قلت لِمْ قال كي أُولد م هذي

قلت لِمْ قال كي أُولد م هذي

ن فوق الكؤوس دُرَّ الحَبَاب

ن فوق الكؤوس دُرَّ الحَبَاب

I said, "Why?" He said, "So I may beget from these two,

I said why? He said so I would be born with these

Above the cups, pearls of foam."

Above cups, the pearls of love

قلت زدني قال النديم المواتي

قلت زدني قال النديم المواتي

قلت لم قال مؤنس الأحباب

قلت لم قال مؤنس الأحباب

I said, "Give me more." He said, "An obliging boon companion."

I said tell me more, he said the women who are loving

I said, "Why?" He said, "He brings cheer to dear friends."

I said why? He said the companions of loved ones
