أم أنجم تبدو بجوٍّ صافِ

Are they choice pearls that have emerged from shells,

Are those pearls that emerged from oyster shells,

Or stars appearing in a clear sky?

Or stars that appear in a clear sky?

أم تلك منِ قطعِ الرياض مسارحٌ

أم تلك منِ قطعِ الرياض مسارحٌ

ترنو بأزهارٍ برزن لِطافِ

ترنو بأزهارٍ برزن لِطافِ

Or are those meadows among patches of gardens,

Or are those stage plots in gardens

Gazing with delicate flowers that have emerged,

Yearning with flowers that bloom gently?

تَفْتَرُّ عن شَنَبِ القِطار ثغورُها

تَفْتَرُّ عن شَنَبِ القِطار ثغورُها

من فوق قامات لهنَّ ضعاف

Their mouths parting to reveal the cool freshness of raindrops,

Their cracks shine through the train of a dress

From atop their frail forms?

Above statuesque figures with weak lower backs.

أم تلك غيدٌ تستبيكَ بحُسْنها

أم تلك غيدٌ تستبيكَ بحُسْنها

مُرْتَجَّة الأعكان والأردافِ

مُرْتَجَّة الأعكان والأردافِ

Or are those supple maidens who captivate you with their beauty,

Or is that a braid beautifying itself

Their belly-folds and buttocks quivering,

With curved hips and buttocks?

نَسقَتْ على بيض النحور لآلِئاً

نَسقَتْ على بيض النحور لآلِئاً

شَفّافة تبدو على شفّافِ

شَفّافة تبدو على شفّافِ

Who have strung pearls upon their white throats,

It strung pearls on the white of necks

Translucent, appearing upon translucent skin?

Transparently appearing on transparency.

أمْ تلك أبياتٌ حططتُ لثامها

أمْ تلك أبياتٌ حططتُ لثامها

من خيرٍ لُغْزٍ في خدور قواف

من خيرٍ لُغْزٍ في خدور قواف

Or are those verses whose veil I have lowered,

Or is that poetry I released from its wraps

From the finest riddle in rhyme's curtained chambers?

Of the best words in the chambers of rhyme?
