A greeting bearing a waft of Darin's fragrance,
Greetings to him who spreads a meadow's scent,
of which the garden and moist aloeswood have spoken.
Of which the garden and wet mandrel speak.
تحمّلهbore it ركبa caravan النسيمthe breeze مراوحاًvisiting at evening
تحمّله ركب النسيم مراوحاً
مغانيكyour dwellings شوقاًin longing ماwhenever أناخhalted بكwith you الركبthe caravan
مغانيك شوقاً ما أناخ بك الركب
The caravan of the breeze bore it, visiting at evening
The caravan of breeze carries it gently,
your dwellings in longing, whenever the caravan halted with you,
Your songs longing - the caravan stopped for you.
بريحانةwith a basil sprig المودaffection تندىgrows dewy غضارةfreshness
بريحانة المود تندى غضارة
إِذاwhen حدثتspoke عنكof you الأخلاءintimate friends والصحبand companions
إِذا حدثت عنك الأخلاء والصحب
with affection's basil, dewy in its freshness,
With the dew of affection the basil is moistened,
whenever intimate friends and companions speak of you.
When the friends and companions speak of you.
وإنand even if لمnot تكنbe كتبيmy letters تمتّclaim a connection سطورهاtheir lines
وإن لم تكن كتبي تمتّ سطورها
بسابقةthrough a prior bond منيfrom me إليكto you فلاthen no عتبreproach
بسابقة مني إليك فلا عتب
And even if my letters' lines lay no claim
And if my poems don't have complete lines,
based on any prior bond from me to you, let there be no reproach.
With no reproach - my heart preceded them to you.
سمعتI heard وبعضand some السمعhearing يعضدهbolsters it الهوىlove
سمعت وبعض السمع يعضده الهوى
فيفضلso it surpasses رؤياvision العينthe eye فارقهاhas forsaken it القلبthe heart
فيفضل رؤيا العين فارقها القلب
I have heard of you; some things heard are strengthened by love,
I heard, and hearing aided by passion,
and so surpass the eye's vision when the heart has forsaken it.
