لا تَلُمْني على الدُعابة والمزح

لا تَلُمْني على الدُعابة والمزح

وقصْدِ المُجون في الشِعْر تارَهْ

وقصْدِ المُجون في الشِعْر تارَهْ

Do not blame me for jesting and joking,

Do not blame me for banter and jest,

or for sometimes courting ribaldry in verse.

And for sometimes seeking ribaldry in verse.

إِنّما العيشُ ذكرُك العيشَ دعه

إِنّما العيشُ ذكرُك العيشَ دعه

كانَ أَوْ لم يكنْ سوى في العبارَهْ

كانَ أَوْ لم يكنْ سوى في العبارَهْ

Life is only your mention of life—let it be,

Life is but your mention of life; leave it be,

whether it was or was not, save as a phrase.

Whether it existed or existed only in words.
