فيin صورةthe guise of الإِشفاقcompassion طَيفُthe phantom النابذِthe forsaker
My angry beloved cast aside the vows; then there came to me
He broke his pledges in anger, bringing pain upon me
In the guise of compassion, the forsaker's phantom.
In the guise of compassion, the specter of the breaker
فسألتُهso I asked him أنthat لاnot يفوهhe speak بماof what جىunclear; likely 'happened'
فَيحيلهand thereby turn him away عنيfrom me بقولٍwith a word نَافذِpiercing
So I asked him not to speak of what had happened [uncertain reading],
So I asked him not to utter what has passed
Lest he turn him away from me with a piercing word.
Lest he turn it against me in decisive speech
فمضىthen he went away ونمَّand informed عليَّagainst me فيماconcerning what قلتهُI had said it
فأتىthen he came يهددنيthreatening me بسيفwith a sword شاحذkeen-edged
But he went and informed against me about what I had said,
Yet he went on, and threw in my face what I had said
And he came threatening me with a keen-edged sword.
Then came to threaten me with a sharpened sword

هذاthis مقامُthe station of المستجيرthe one seeking protection العائذthe one seeking refuge
Have mercy! The phantom spoke truly; indeed,
Have mercy, for imagination told the truth
This is only the station of one seeking protection and refuge.
This is the place of one seeking refuge
