ياoh حبّذاhow lovely منزلٌa dwelling ومرتَبَعُand a springtime retreat
يا حبّذا منزلٌ ومرتَبَعُ
طابَwas pleasant لناfor us اليومtoday فيهin it مجتمَعُa gathering
طابَ لنا اليوم فيه مجتمَعُ
Oh, how lovely a dwelling and a springtime retreat!
Oh how delightful, this abode and its precinct
Our gathering there today was delightful.
Has become congenial for us today, a place we frequent
حيثُwhere النسيمthe breeze انبرىcame forth علىat مَهَلٍan unhurried pace
حيثُ النسيم انبرى على مَهَلٍ
يعتنقembraces الغصنthe branch وهوwhile it يمتنعresists
يعتنق الغصن وهو يمتنع
Where the breeze came forth at an unhurried pace,
Where the breeze gently stirs at a leisurely pace
embracing the branch as it resists.
Embracing the branch though it shows some restraint
والروضand the garden فينانthick with boughs بالندىwith dew خَضِلٌmoist
والروض فينان بالندى خَضِلٌ
والمرجand the meadow رَحْبُbroad النِطاقthe extent متسعspacious
والمرج رَحْبُ النِطاق متسع
And the garden is thick with boughs, moist with dew,
The meadow, arrayed in its dewy green mantles
And the meadow is broad in extent and spacious.
With the vast, wide-open plains, a sight so pleasant
والنهرand the river بينamong الغصونthe boughs مُطردflowing steadily
والنهر بين الغصون مُطرد
وموجهand its waves تابعfollowing ومُتَّبَعُand followed
وموجه تابع ومُتَّبَعُ
And the river flows steadily among the boughs,
The river, flowing between branches so verdant
And its waves follow and are followed in turn.
Its waves follow on, in constant movement
والطيرand the birds جذلانjoyous فيin جوانبهits surroundings
والطير جذلان في جوانبه
فصادحٌso, singing بعضهsome of them ومنتجعand seeking forage
فصادحٌ بعضه ومنتجع
And the birds are joyous along its banks,
The birds gathered on its banks, chirping with delight
So some sing, and others seek forage.
Calling to each other, a euphonious regiment
فيamong معشرa company of people لمnot تزلcease مآثرهمtheir noble deeds
في معشر لم تزل مآثرهم
تتلىare recited بأوجat the summit of العُلىglory وتُسْتَمَعُand are listened to
تتلى بأوج العُلى وتُسْتَمَعُ
Among a company whose noble deeds have never ceased
In a company whose glorious deeds
to be recited at glory's summit and listened to.
Are recited, exalted, and always lent an attentive ear
فهمfor they لطيبtoward the nobility of الجدودthe forefathers قدindeed نزعواthey have taken after
فهم لطيب الجدود قد نزعوا
وفيand in رياضthe gardens of العلومlearning قدindeed رتعواthey have grazed
وفي رياض العلوم قد رتعوا
For they have taken after their noble forefathers,
For they have partaken of the finest ancestries
And in the gardens of learning they have grazed.
And in the gardens of knowledge, they have long taken their share
