من قِصار الفصول داني القطافِ
Choose for the drinking companions each tale,
Select for regret every conversation
From brief passages, easy to pluck.
Of the eloquent words, whose harvest is near
يَتمَّنىlongs for الجليسُthe companion عُمْرَlifespan معاذٍMu‘adh
يَتمَّنى الجليسُ عُمْرَ معاذٍ
لِتَلقِّيto receive معادهits retelling الشفّافlimpid
لِتَلقِّي معاده الشفّاف
The companion longs for Mu‘adh’s lifespan
The companion wishes for Mu'adh's life
To hear its limpid retelling.
To find his clear fulfillment
وتنقلand move منfrom الدُعابةjest للجدِّto earnestness
وتنقل من الدُعابة للجدِّ
وخيّمْand camp حيثwhere المعانيthe meanings اللّطافdelicate
وخيّمْ حيث المعاني اللّطاف
And move from jest to earnestness,
And to shift from jesting to seriousness
And pitch your tent where meanings are delicate.
