أرِشfeather ليfor me جناحَthe wing of الحظّfortune مولايmy lord إِننيindeed I
إِذاif لمْnot تَرشْهُyou feather it الدهرَfor all time جَلْدٌsteadfast علىin الصَبْرpatience
Feather fortune's wing for me, my lord, for I—
Oh Lord, sprinkle me with the wings of good fortune,
if you do not feather it—am ever steadfast in patience.
For if fate does not sprinkle them, patience is but skin over fire.

ولاand no خيرgood منfrom بعدafter الشبيبةyouth فيin العمرlife
With the gathering's sweet basil, I unraveled my youth,
The blossoms of youth have wasted my youth,
and there is no good in life after youth.
And there is no good in life after youth.
وحسبُand enough for الفتىthe young man إِنif لمnot يَنَلْhe attains ماwhat يريدهhe desires

And it is enough for a young man, if he does not attain what he desires,
It is enough for a young man, if he does not get what he wants,
even with patience, to be found remaining steadfast in patience.
Along with patience, to wrap himself in patience.

علىon top of خيبةthe disappointment of الآمالhopes جمراًembers علىupon جمرembers
I turned a blind eye while the days hurled into my breast
I have been patient while the days cast into my innermost being,
embers upon embers, on top of dashed hopes.
Upon the embers of failed hopes, embers upon embers.
