مُذْsince رأَتsaw عينيmy eye وقدwhile already رمَدتْit had become inflamed
مُذْ رأَت عيني وقد رمَدتْ
لونَthe color خديهِhis two cheeks منfrom الألمِthe pain
لونَ خديهِ من الألمِ
Since my eye, already inflamed, saw
Since my eyes saw, though now they're dimmed,
The color of his cheeks while in pain,
The pallor of his cheek, pain's mark,
رامَhe sought يبكيهاto weep for it ورَقَّand felt compassion لهاfor it
رامَ يبكيها ورَقَّ لها
فاتقتهso it guarded itself against him منfrom دمٍblood بدمِwith blood
فاتقته من دمٍ بدمِ
He sought to weep for it and felt compassion for it;
He wept for her, his tears like dew,
So it warded him off—blood against blood.
She feared him, blood for blood a trade.
