    He said:

The cloud of incense spreads its haze,

And the cup's daughter dances with bubbles.

And Time's eye has fallen asleep, so awaken

A joy whose gaze is downcast with care.

And never seek help from anything but strong wine

When your fate confronts you with spears.

When it is mixed, sparks fly from it,

Blunting the points of care, keeping them from striking.

And do not say that gray hair bars you from it:

For it has pledged to restore our youth.

And do not seek refuge with a base man,

Whom you treat gently, only for him to answer harshly.

For I have aspirations that, when the nights assail,

Perch upon the crowns of clouds.

Such is the world: it gladdens when it wishes,

And saddens whom it will, showing no favor.

When its calamities awaken against someone,

No nighttime talk of reproach will lull them to sleep.

And if they multiply, meet them with a heart

Steadfast in courage, spacious in its bounds.

Whenever the gardens of merit flourish to the full,

Then the land of fortune lies barren all around.

Perplexities are illumined by the excellence of my speech,

And the disputant quails before my address.

And though a boastful rival towers through noble deeds,

And challenges me, he falls short of my heights.

And I marvel how the nights conceal me,

While the sun's face is hidden in my blaze.

The faces of my virtues are fair, yet

I have found it sweet to veil myself with fortune's hem.

If some people's robes of honor are soiled,

Then keep your robes white as long as you live.

And Time has handed me over to people

Who, when counted, are not among my companions.

They rose unjustly, while their souls hurled

Them, by nature, down beneath the dust.

Dogs have greater merit than they do,

Nor do they have the faithfulness of dogs.

Before the loaf they keep arrows of meanness,

That turn seekers away from their quest.
