لَناours التَهنِئاتُthe congratulations وَفَرطُand abundance of الجَذَلjoy
وَأَنتَand you أَجَلُّmore exalted وَأَعلىand higher مَحلin rank
Ours are the congratulations and overflowing joy,
Congratulations and abundant generosity are ours,
while you are more exalted and higher in rank.
While you are of the highest and most exalted status.
وانand though كانَit was فَتحاًa victory أَجَلَّthe greatest of الفَتوحvictories
وَلَكِنَّbut قَدركyour stature فَوقَabove الأَجَلthe greatest
Though this victory is the greatest of victories,
Though this was the greatest opening of conquests,
yet your stature surpasses even the greatest.
Your destiny is beyond epochs.
وَأَيُّand what عَظيمٍgreat one وَمُستَكبِرٍand haughty one
إِلىat جَنبِthe side of مَجدِكyour glory لاnot يُستَقلis deemed small
And what great or haughty man
What great and arrogant man
is not deemed small beside your glory?
Can compare to your magnificent glory?
فَمِنso from فَيلَقٍa host سائِرٍadvancing نَحوَهُمtoward them
لِغُنمٍfor spoils وَمِنand from غانِمٍone gaining spoils قَدalready قَفَلreturned
So from a host advancing toward them
Horsemen marched against them,
for spoils, and from one who has returned with booty,
Returning with spoils and as victors.
بَشائِرٌglad tidings يُطرِبُناdelights us ذِكرُهاmention of them
وَيُشغِلُناand occupies us وَصفُهاtheir description عَنfrom غَزَلlove poetry
come glad tidings whose telling delights us,
Tidings that delight us to hear
and whose recounting turns us from love poetry.
And whose description distracts us from amorous verse.
سَحابُthe cloud of عِقابِكَyour punishment غَشّاهُمُcovered them
فَأَودىso brought ruin بِهِمupon them وَقعُهُits fall وَهوَand it was طَلdew
The cloud of your punishment covered them,
The clouds of your punishment overcast them,
and its fall destroyed them, though it was mere dew.
Striking them down with its first drops.
وَأَهلَكَand devastated أَرضَهُمُtheir land بالرَذاذِwith drizzle
فَكَيفَthen how يَكونُwould it be إِذاif ماindeed (emphatic) هَطلit poured
And it ravaged their land with drizzle—
It destroyed their land with sprinkling,
so what would it do if it poured?
So how will it be when it truly pours down?
وَكَمand how often قَدindeed هَرَقتَyou spilled دِماءَthe blood of العِدىthe foes
تَصُحُّyou restore to health عَليلاًan ailing person وَتشفيand soothe غُلَلburning thirsts
And how often you have spilled the blood of foes,
How much enemy blood have you spilled,
healing the ailing and quenching burning thirsts.
Healing the sick and freeing prisoners?
وَكَمand how many لَكَwere yours مِنof غَزوَةa raid قَبلهاbefore it
وَماand there is not لِسواكَfor anyone other than you سِوىanything but مُرتَحلa journey
And how many raids were yours before this one,
How many raids preceded this one,
while others had nothing but a journey.
With none to match your tireless efforts?
شَحنتَyou loaded الشَوانيَthe galleys بالدارِعينَwith armored men
فَجاءَتكَso they came to you مُوقِرةًladen بالنَفَلwith spoils
You loaded the galleys with armored men,
You summoned the brave warriors,
and they came to you laden with spoils.
And they dutifully brought their gifts.
جَوارٍships تَطيرُfly بأُسدِwith the lions of الشَرىal-Shara
وَتزأَرُand roar ماas long as غابَis out of sight الأَسَلthe spears
Ships that fly bearing the lions of al-Shara,
Cowards that flee the evils of conflict
and roar while the spears are out of sight.
And roar when the lions have gone.
حَملنَthey carried اليكَto you سَباياthe captive women of الَّذيthe one who
طَغىtransgressed فَحمَّلنَso they brought اليهِto him الأَجَلdeath
They bore to you the captive women of the one
They brought you captives of those
who transgressed; then they bore death to him.
Who tyrannized, and whom you brought death.
وَلَوand even if لَمnot تَصِلreach سابِقاتُthe foremost of الرِماحِthe spears
اليهمto them كَفَتwould have sufficed سابِقاتُthe forerunners of الوَهَلterror
And had the foremost spears not reached
Had the speartips not reached them first,
them, the first onrush of terror would have sufficed.
Their fear and anguish would have killed them.
وَلَوand even if لَمnot يَمتهمkilled them قِراعُthe blows of السُيوفِthe swords
أَماتَهُمُwould have killed them خَوفُهاfear of them وَالوَجَلand dread
And had the blows of swords not killed them,
Had the swordblows not finished them off,
fear of them and dread would have killed them.
Their dread of your might around them would have.
وَقَدand indeed أَيقَنواthey were certain بالتَوىof ruin إِذwhen وَهىgave way
لِبأسِكَbefore your might حَولَهُمtheir strength وَالحِيَلand stratagems
And they were certain of ruin when these gave way:
They knew repentance was futile,
their strength and stratagems before your might.
When your prowess encircled them without escape.
وَلَكِنbut تَعرَّضَهُمbeset them ضَلَّةًleading astray
كِذابُthe falsehood of المُنىwishes وَخِداعُand the deceit of الأَمَلhope
Yet they were beset, and led astray, by
But the deceitful hopes of fate
the lies of wishes and the deceit of hope.
Misguided them down wrong paths.
