O you who possess me through repeated kindness,

And thus you hold a free man's halter.

You have treated me justly while people wrong me,

So I shall surely thank you until the end of time.

Favors upon favors you bestow in succession:

They were light for you, yet weighed down my back.

So I shall surely give thanks for past kindnesses,

So perhaps my gratitude will repay some of them.

And you revealed what they had hidden about me,

And you recognized what they did not know of my worth.

So I shall surely spread over you some of my praise,

As gardens thank the rain with their fragrance.
