قُطِعَتmay be severed يَدٌa hand قطَعتcut ذَوائِبَtresses شَعرهhis hair
قُطِعَت يَدٌ قطَعت ذَوائِبَ شَعره
لِمwhy طاوَعَتit obeyed ذاthat one أَمرَهاcommanded it فيin أَمرِهِhis affair
لِم طاوَعَت ذا أَمرَها في أَمرِهِ
May the hand that cut the tresses of his hair be severed!
A hand was cut off that had cut his braided hair
Why did it obey the one who commanded it concerning him?
Why did it obey him in his affair?
قَطَعواthey cut ذَوائِبَهhis tresses لِيَمحواto erase حُسنَهhis beauty
قَطَعوا ذَوائِبَه لِيَمحوا حُسنَه
فَجَلواso they cleared غَياهِبَdeep darkness لَيلِهِhis night عَنaway from ثَغرِهِhis mouth
فَجَلوا غَياهِبَ لَيلِهِ عَن ثَغرِهِ
They cut his tresses to erase his beauty,
They cut his braids to erase his beauty
Yet they cleared the deep darkness of his night away from his mouth.
And unveiled the darkness of his night from his face
