How many sharp swords lie between your eyelids,

which your glance unsheathes against the lovesick one!

O oppressor whom I made judge, who then transgressed,

to you I complain of you, O my oppressor.

How far the wronged man is from his due,

if the lawsuit is against the judge!

I did not know whence love assailed me

and carried me astray from its safe path:

from your kohl-dark eye, or your

smiling mouth, or from your coal-black hair?

You have ruled over lovers; so judge as

Muhammad was appointed judge over the world.
