إِلّا ليطرُقَه الخَيالُ إِذا سَرى
He never slept after parting, savoring slumber,
Sleep escapes the estranged, homesickness overtakes him by night
save that the phantom might visit him when it roamed by night.
Except his imagination visits when he journeys afar

Bound to your nearness, when distance kept him away
by the distance, he took the shorter road.
The shorter path he took in his travels

And when he pictured you in his memory
then it is folly for an eye to stay awake.
Of shadows and stars a sleepless night for him

Visited him at night, unaware in the dark

And a loved one, heavy in frame whose right
who always carries wine to become drunk.
Is to be ever drunk, carrying the cup

Flowering fair in the morn and light

The reproacher rebuked me harshly, never having seen him, out of ignorance;
Reproach was harsh, though not seeing it as ignorance
and in passionate jealousy I begrudge his seeing him and being excused.
I'm jealous with passion lest he be excused

known whom he was blaming me for, he would have stopped.
But known whom he wrongs, it would have been curtailed

I lost him, and lost the power to endure.
I missed him and lost composure to show strength

Chide not my tears flowing, for the critic
that his departure should not be a rain-bearing star.
Would that their flow formed no rainclouds, no downpour

I weep remembering life, glory for its seeker
true life is what makes you weep when remembered.
That life you weep not to recall it, does confound

And one taking leave, whose tears separation sought,
A farewell, his tears the parting, his neck bent
and a spiteful foe's watchfulness forbade him, leaving him perplexed.
Perplexed, in the hands of one pulling away

A crescent seems through his hollowness
but for watching eyes, he would become a full moon.
Were it under watch, a full moon it would appear

The caution of spies has concealed his appearance
but hidden passion refused to remain unseen.
But the secrecy of passion refuses to be obscured

And he aimed true, piercing iron with readiness
an arrow—yet it did not pierce the screening silk.
An arrow, and silk would not veil it hidden

was killing not enough for them, that they must bewitch?
Or does her murder not suffice that she bewitches too?

And beware, yes beware, that wicked sorcerer

Of love grew strong, so he was left confused
