Has my ruin in saving you both not sufficed you?
Is it not enough how you two evade each other
And you resent nothing but the excess of my love for you.
Yet you still resent nothing but your fervent love

O you who shame the bough, you are not turned from weariness
O you who shame the bough, no boredom can dissuade you
by love, yet every breeze that blows bends you.
Passionately swayed by every gust of wind

I have come to belong to the moon held captive in the two fetters
To the imprisoned moon in my shackles I awoke
of bondage, a slave to the fawn that is itself enslaved.
A captive of fate - to destiny enslaved

I lie envying his mouth for the sweetness of his saliva
At night I envy his sweet scent
at night, and at dawn I envy the toothsticks.
And in the morn those who evenly divide

O bearer of wine in his mouth and in his palm,
O bearer of comfort and relief in your mouth
leave what is in your hand: life's spirit is in your mouth.
Leave what little life remains in your hands

Is your secret not concealed despite my infatuation?
Is not your secret veiled over your sturdy palms
Then what harm is it to you that you have become exposed?
Why care if you’re falsely accused

And why grow angry if the talebearers say, 'He has forgotten'?
Why be angry if slanderers spew their lies
When you know that I do not forget you?
When you know I do not act thus

May I never attain union with you if what they claimed is true,
I attained not your union if what they claimed were true
nor may Ibn Ruzzik's bounty quench my thirst.
Nor quenched my thirst the generosity of Ibn Ruzzayk

Guide of all guides, best of men, your least gift
his least gifts are your utmost hopes.

Slayer of a thousand—he meets them and overcomes them,
A thousand he slays, yet he defeats them
and giver of a thousand—you meet him, and he enriches you.
A thousand he gives, and he enriches you

بشعب شَمل العلا لَولا تلافيكا
O dispeller of the great calamity when it descended—
Dispeller of the mighty gloom that befell
it would have sundered glory's unity, but for your intervention.
A people shaded by your patronage

You raced far ahead; none matched you over any course,
You surpassed all before any could rival you
no mortal of old, nor does any mortal approach you now.
Neither ancient souls nor modern equal you

فَلَو سَعى كانَ أَيضاً مِن مَساعيكا
Your deeds showed the paths of glory to one who knew them not;
You saw the paths of glory undiscovered
and if he strove, that too would count among your deeds.
Had another strived, he too could have trodden your footsteps

وَيُقتِرُ المَرءُ عَن بُعدٍ فَيَرجوكا
The king fears you though his dwelling is far from you,
Kings fear your reproach and distance their abode
and a man falls into poverty far away, and so hopes in you.
Men plead poverty to seek your favour

فَينثَنون وَبَيتُ المالِ يَشكوكا
The sons of hope complain to you of their poverty;
The hopeful complain to you of their destitution
so they depart, while the treasury complains of you.
Then relent as the state treasury laments you

With an elephant filling the lands with his roaring
before which steadfast mountains are crushed flat,
Stalwart pillars are humbled for him

موفَّراً وَتُلاقي المالَ مَنهوكا
made up of every lionlike warrior whose honor [you find] a sanctuary,
The honorable man meets his wealth plundered
kept inviolate, while you find his wealth depleted.
While the rascal finds money pouring forth

You made iron soft as water honed it
one like iron, whom God fashioned deadly.
God created the like of iron in you as a warrior

Deaf to dishonor, they never heed its summoner;
Deaf to blame, they come not to his summons
but if you call them to war, they answer you.
But if you call for war, they answer you

يَرَونَ أَكبرَ غُنمٍ أَن أَطاعوكا
You sent them toward the army of polytheism, and they set forth,
You dispatched them to the heathen horde
deeming obedience to you the greatest gain.
They saw obeying you as the greatest spoils
سارواthey marched إِلىtoward المَوتِdeath قُدماًboldly forward ماnot كأَنَّهُمas though they

They marched boldly toward death, as though they had not
They marched unto death as if it were
ever seen a path of flight being taken.
No path ever trodden or known

So they led the brown spears to drink from their foes' throats,
They made the throats of the enemy their cup
and made the hooves trample heads upon the plain,
And trampled the skulls of the archers

وَيَخرُقُ الزَرَدَ الماذيَّ مَحبوكا
with blows and thrusts that cleave firmly forged helmets
Striking and stabbing they boldly advance
and pierce tightly woven mail of fine steel.
Shattering mail and piercing interwoven coats of armor

نَوحٌ عَلى بَطَلٍ لَولاكَ ماشيكا
And in every quarter of their lands, night brought
In every corner of the enemy's land
mourning for a champion who, but for you, would never have been pierced.
A bereaved kinsman weeps but for you

At dusk they were kings of might; at dawn they were assailed
Yesterday kings led captives, today
by lions who brought them to you as captive slaves.
A lion returned them to you enslaved

None escaped them except one whose stronghold
None escaped save those in an impregnable redoubt
was a well-built steed that he spurred and urged onward.
Spurred by you to gallop and take flight

O Kaaba of generosity, I have been held back by poverty
O Kaaba of munificence, poverty has anchored me
and straitened means from my bounden pilgrimage to you.
My straitened means hinder my sacred duty to you

Your morning cloud has rained abundantly for me, and I am encouraged
Your departed pilgrims bequeathed me hope
by the generosity in you to seek rain from your night cloud.
Of your magnanimity in requesting your aid

Whom can I look to, O generous one of the age, to revive me
My journey hopes for none but you, O bounty of time
with his bounty, if my striving in hope of you should fail?
Without you, to my family I return empty-handed

Shall I praise the Turks, seeking bounty among them,
I see the plains watered while pleased
while poetry has remained neglected among the Turks?
Your orchards are equally irrigated

Do not leave me—having hoped for none on my journey
but you—to return to my family a pauper.

I see the salt flats have their fill of water; content
with equal treatment and a shared portion from you are the gardens.
