He united every charm when his cheek grew downy,

and his fresh violet and his rose appeared.

A bough the east wind sways, with help from

youth’s exuberance; so his supple figure bends.

No wonder if he wounds hearts with his glance,

for a keen sword’s edge does just the same.

And the languor in his eyelid deceives you,

yet a sword’s blade cuts, not its sheath.

Sipping his cool saliva quenches my burning thirst,

and increases my thirst for him and his rose.

Angry, he seeks my abasement, yet I honor him

always; he loves to slay me, yet I love him.

O you who portray everything as easy,

except his reproaching me and his turning away.

And if my tears faithfully lend aid, even if I am faithless,

it was for a day like this that I kept them in reserve.
