أَفيis there in كُلِّevery يَومٍday فُرقَةٌa parting وَنُزوحُand departure
وَوَجدٌand longing لِماءِfor the water of المُقلَتَينِboth eyes نَزوحُdraining
Does every day bring parting and departure,
And longing that drains the water of both eyes?

When I say, 'The staff of separation now lies cast aside,'
A far-flinging separation confronts me, wearing out the riding camels.
فَياso, oh عَجَباًwhat a wonder جِسميmy body المُقيمُstaying behind معذَّبtormented
وَقَلبيand my heart الَّذيwhich فيamong الظاعِنينthose departing قَريحُwounded
How strange! My body, which stays behind, is tormented,
And my heart, which is among those departing, is wounded.

وَيسقمُand grows sick جِسميmy body وَالوِدادَwhile love صَحيحُsound
My endurance dwindles, while tears are abundant;
My body sickens, though my love is sound.
وألتذُّكرَّand I relish the renewed assault اللَحظِof the glance وَالسَهمُand the arrow دونَهُfalls short of it
وَماyet not التذَّhas relished رجعَthe return السَهمِof the arrow فيهِwithin him جَريحُa wounded man
And I relish the glance's renewed assault, though an arrow falls short of it;
Yet no wounded man has relished an arrow's return within him.
عَسىmay أَنthat تريحواyou grant relief مِنfrom غَرامٍtormenting love فَتُطلقواand so release
أَسيرَكُمُyour captive أَوor تَقتُلواyou kill فَتُريحواand so grant rest
May you relieve me of passion and set free
Your captive—or kill him and grant him rest.

And my ribs are indeed [folded] around sorrow,
While in my burning liver lie love's anguish and sores.

A songster stirs my anguish in the evening,
And a full-voiced singer cleaves my heart in the morning.
يَنوحit laments وَلَمthough not يفقدhas lost أَليفاًa companion يَشوقُهwho makes it yearn
وأَفقدand I have lost الفاًa companion شائِقاًstirring longing فأنوحso I lament
It laments, though it has lost no companion who makes it yearn;
I have lost a companion who rouses longing, and so I lament.
وَليand I have مقلةan eye لاnot يَملِكُcan restrain الصَبرَpatience دَمعَهاits tears

وَقَلبٌand a heart لَجوجٌstubborn فيin الغَرامِpassion جَموحunbridled
I have an eye whose tears patience cannot restrain,
And a stubborn heart, unbridled in passion.

وَعَينٌand an eye اذاwhen ماever السَفحthe mountainside لاحَappears سفوحُstreaming with tears
A heart that lightning sends flying whenever it flares,
And an eye that streams whenever the mountainside appears.
أُكاتِمُI conceal from صَحبيmy companions الوَجدَlonging اذاwhen بَداhe appears
يَلوحُshining بداbecomes apparent وَجديmy longing لهto him فَيَلوحُand so shines forth
I hide my longing from my companions; when he appears,
Shining, my longing becomes plain to him and shines forth.
يَقولونthey say أَجرواraise ذِكرَthe mention of كُلِّevery جَميلَةٍbeautiful woman

They say, 'Mention every beautiful woman
Before him, and humor him; perhaps he will confess.'
يَقولونthey say ليI have شِعرverse مَليحٌfine مَهذَّبٌpolished
فَقُلتُso I said لَوif only أَنَّthat الحَظَّthe luck منهfrom it مَليحُfine
They say my verse is fine and polished;
I said, 'If only my luck from it were fine as well!'

In fine composition my lot-arrow is Muʿallā, the winning lot;
But in the fortune it brings, it is Manīḥ, the blank lot.
فَماso not زَلَّتُhave I ceased أَحميto deny النَفسmyself وِرداًa drink عَلىdespite الظَماthirst

وَأَشفقُand I fear مِنof أَنto أَجتَديbeg for gifts وَأَليحand hint at my need
So I have always denied myself a drink, despite my thirst,
And fear to beg for gifts and hint at my need.

And when I saw that Time had made amends, since now
Salah al-Din, ever righteous, was giving generously within it,

I said to myself, 'Return to poetry, for
A straitened life will turn to spacious ease.'
فَماfor no بعدهbeyond him مَلِكٌking بهthrough whom يُرتَجىmay be hoped for الغِنىwealth

For beyond him there is no king through whom wealth may be hoped for,
Nor anyone who gives when asked for a gift.

Riches from him will not be slow to reach me, once
My praises of him set forth and roam abroad.

Praise of you is beloved, for you are noble;
Your qualities are the soul within the words of praise.

And every panegyric not about you is false,
And every tribute not for you is wind.

وَقَولاًand speech اذاwhen اختَلَّis flawed المَقالُdiscourse صَحيحُsound
So I have offered radiant verses, graced by their fine composition,
And speech that stays sound when other speech is flawed.
فَخذso take باقياًwhat endures مِنّيfrom me بِفانٍin exchange for what perishes فَماfor never غَلاhas been too costly

So take the lasting from me for the fleeting; never is
Praise too dear in worldly wealth for a free and generous man.

The praises I have finely wrought will remain,
While what you have given will perish and pass away.

Not everyone who sets out to war is a horseman,
Nor is everyone who utters praise eloquent.
