مَولايَmy lord لاmay ... not بِتَّyou spend the night فيin ضُريmy suffering وَفيand in سَهَريmy sleeplessness
وَلاand may ... not لَقيتَyou encounter الَّذيwhat أَلقىI encounter مِنَof الفِكَرِthoughts
My lord, may you never spend a night in my suffering and sleeplessness,
nor endure the anxious thoughts that I endure.
باتَتspent the night لِوَعدِكَfor your promise عَينيmy eye غَيرَnot راقِدَةٍsleeping
وَاللَيلُand the night حَيُّalive الدَياجيthe deep darkness مَيِّتdead السَحَرthe hours before dawn
My eye stayed sleepless all night because of your promise,
while night was alive in its darkness, dead in its predawn hours.
أَوَدُّI wish for مِنfrom قَمَرٍa moon فيinto الأَرضِthe earth غَيبَتَهُits disappearance
وَأَرقَبُand I watch for الشَمسَthe sun مِنout of شَوقيmy longing إِلىfor القَمَرِthe moon
I wish a moon would vanish into the earth,
and watch for the sun out of my longing for the moon.
هَذاall this وَقَدand indeed بِتُّI spent the night مِنof وَصلِunion عَلىin ثِقَةconfidence
فَكَيفَso how لَوif بِتُّI spent the night مِنof هَجرِseparation عَلىat خَطَرrisk
All this, though I spent the night assured of union—
how, then, if I had spent it at risk of separation?
