The edges of keen swords and the tips of slender spears

guarantee you whatever spoils they have seized.

And your sufficient surety for all you seek is

    honor, resolve, and valor unfeigned.

What they gained in plunder brings you no disgrace:

through guile, even lions may be despoiled by stratagems.

They resorted to tricks only out of cowardice,

for they had no strength to face the army.

They were alert, while God willed your heedlessness,

so that the fate fixed from eternity might be fulfilled.

They came upon you with no fine mail near at hand,

nor blades within reach of one hard-pressed and hurried.

Spears lay cast aside, and bows were unstrung,

while horses ranged far away, grazing with untended herds.

What can a lion do, without fang or claw,

against the pale gazelles and ibex around him?

Why not attack when lions had mounted their falcons, and had

drawn their blades beneath forests of spearshafts,

each clad in ample, gleaming mail—shooting

arrows at it was merely flicking pebbles—

and had become bands in their land, a terror,

their lowliest ranging to its farthest reaches at ease?

They only neglected their vigilance through confidence

in their host; how many a confident man has been shamed!

    وَالمَكرُ في كُلِّ انسانٍ أَخو الفَشَلِ

    Sons of al-Usayfir, you gained nothing by your cunning;

cunning, in every man, is brother to failure.

You brought back no captives—your striving failed—

but lesser men, followers, and the dregs.

You seized the sleek steeds, unsaddled and unbridled,

the brown spears planted upright, the bright swords in their sheaths.

Is one who takes horses after slaying their riders

like one who takes them hobbled and tethered?

Or is the taker of a planted spear like one who seizes it,

while battle rages, from its wielder's grasp?

An army struck by the evil eye for its perfection; none

escapes the evil eye except the imperfect.

They have an example in the day of Hunayn: those men were

the best of mankind, among them the Seal of the Messengers.

He will wear you down with blows, at whose lightest

helmets are like eggs and coats of mail like robes:

a king far removed from taints, deeply devoted

to truth in speech and sincerity in deeds.

    وَالسَيفُ ما فُلّ وَالأَطواد لَم تَزُلِ

    The brown spears have not paled, nor has the sun set;

the sword is not blunted, nor have the mountains moved.

How much darkness has lifted through Nur al-Din's light—

darkness of oppression—and how many canopies of shadow have parted!

How often, by my life, they checked their steeds in cowardice

at the encounter, and lowered their gaze in shame!

And many a town where only champions could be seen

    now shows nothing but ruins.

Tell those who fled: check your steeds in cowardice

at the encounter, and lower your gaze in shame.

You sought the plain, hoping to escape; yet had you

sought refuge with your king, you would have sheltered against a mountain.

You abandoned him and fled, yet he saved you

with a fellowship even a mountain could not win, had it sought it.

You hurried away before your quivers had been emptied,

your brown lances unused, your bright blades not humbled.

You had not hammered an attacking host with a downpour of arrows,

nor had swords plunged deep into heads.

He stood alone when his armies had given way,

and in his own person he had a thundering host,

in a scene that, had the lions of the thickets witnessed it,

they would have fallen upon their chins from sheer terror.

Alone amid the foe, steadfast of heart, while

hearts far away had taken flight in terror.

He returns among them slowly, untroubled

by them, having charged among them without a care.

He advances ever more boldly toward them, certain

that retreat cannot protect against the appointed hour.

How close they were to capturing even the farthest of you,

had they not been distracted from doing so!

    لا تَحسَبوا وَثَباتِ الضُمَّرِ الذُلَلِ

    His steadfast stand against the horses' breasts saved you;

do not imagine it was the leaps of your lean, docile steeds.

Lions are not caught unawares every time,

nor can a palsied man strike one mighty in assault.

And God is your aid in what you intend,

as He aided you in your earlier days.

How many realms of theirs you have taken without compensation,

and how many of their towns you have gained without exchange!

And how often you have given spearpoints drink from a king's throat,

and feasted scavengers from a champion's back!

And many a brown spear drinks from the vein of the throat,

and many a falcon feeds on the flesh of one laid low.

    لَو لَم يَطُل عَهدُه بالسَيفِ لَم يَطُلِ

    Your sword's crop—you have spared it for a while;

had it not been long since it met the sword, it would not have grown tall.

May fate never turn your arrow from its mark,

nor the days turn your hand away from hope.
