وَبالجَرعand at al-Jarʿ (the sandy tract) رَسمٌa trace مِثلُlike جِسميَmy body شاحِبُpale

And at al-Jarʿ, a trace lies pale as my body;
Its silence calls to longing, and longing answers.

ظِلٌّshade وَفيand in الطَلَلِthe ruined dwelling المَحيلbarren سَحائِبُclouds
I send it a tear that, amid burning anguish,
Is shade, and on the barren ruin, clouds.

And I visit it alone, for fear of a reproacher,
Or out of jealousy, lest a companion join me.

Ruined camps—I saw separation's raven cry
In their midst, and knew who the despoiler was.

And I knew, when the suns of their litters rose
Through the clouds of my tears, that they were setting.

My sleep and waking are alike in my love for you,
And among the errant arrows, death's arrow strikes true.

My sleep and waking are alike in my love for you,
Save that the lying dream-vision comforts me.

In both states I see you, except that I
By day forget that you are absent in person.
وَبَخيلَةٍand a stingy woman بالوَصلِwith union لَوif سَمَحَتshe was generous بِهِwith it

And a woman stingy with union—were she to grant it,
Sharp swords and keen blades would rush to bar it.

Until a seeker fails before Ṭalāʾiʿ.

صَعبٌunassailable وَماand there is no لِمَدىto the reach of عُلاهhis loftiness مُقارِبone who comes near
Humble, though the stars are below his station;
Unassailable, with none approaching the height of his glory.

Like the sun in the heart of the sky: its station
Is distant, while its radiance is near.

لِلحَربto war فَهوَso he مُوادِعٌa truce-maker وَمُحارِبُand a warrior
He made inclining toward peace a ladder
To war; so he both makes truces and wages war.
