May Damascus, and the days that passed there, be watered
It watered Damascus, and days have passed in it
by rain-bearing clouds, those of night and those of morning,
The rains pouring down, going and coming

Yellow it hides sometimes and sometimes reveals

by pregnant rainclouds within the wombs of her lands.
From the pregnant clouds in the barren plains

Nor fulfilled its passion for its valley

Nor consoled from the chains of its cypresses
nor, in my home, forgotten the dweller beside her stream.
Nor forgot my neighbor dwelling next to it

As if its rivers were returning prey
with daggers of silver along their edges.
Daggers of mud in its outskirts

If it pleases my eye after losing it

Ah, for her, when rain adorned her unadorned places
Oh what misery when the barren rain poured on it
with garlands, and her naked growth put on leaves.
Crowning it and the bare leaves clothed it

He lights it with his valleys and shades it

She gazes at you, smiling through the eye of her blossoms,
It gestures to you with laughing eyes
when an eye of autumn rain has spent the night weeping over her.
As a branded eye weeps for it

And the stream pours for it pours
their youth just as their forelocks have turned white.
Its youth is complete as its hair turned white

upon their leaves, while the hand of the rain-stars gives them drink.
And the soft hand of the breeze waters it

Their drink ran clear, so their lower parts grew green,
It cleared its drinking so its lower part turned green
until the shade spread wide and their tops turned white.
Until the shade overflowed and its heights turned white

The river clapped, and the branches danced,
And the branches clapped and danced
dotting it with pearls from their collarbones.
Speckling it with pearls from its necklaces

As if its necklaces were dancing Oh she is
and the stringing failed them, so their pearls cascaded down.
And rhythm betrayed her so her jewels fell

And the eyes of the water poured its channels
and the wide, dark eyes rivaled her watercourses.
And the eyes of the writhing poured its channels

And a branch met a similar branch and
her moons, and her turtledoves answered them.
Its moons responded to its moons

So for delight and hearing however it spurs
from her young gazelle’s face or her singer’s voice.
From its diverting cheek or shouting voice

Whenever resolve drew a heart away from excessive love,
When determination faltered from over love
a branch swayed before resolve, swaying it in turn.
A heart bent for it and a branch bent in it

A gazelle: when his glances brought death
Lovely when she brings her gaze for a while
to the soul, he greeted it with his cheeks and revived it.
To enliven the soul with her cheek it gives it life

He kisses the cup, which blushes whenever it drinks
The cup kisses me in shyness whenever she drinks
in his mouth’s water and compares it with what it holds.
So she compared it to what was in it

A sky whose stream returns the humbled sun from us
away from us, and revealed stars throughout its reaches.
And shows stars in its horizons

Ah, could I know, despite the distance: am I remembered
Oh would that I knew my friends in their distant land Not a band I will forget for all of time
by a band I shall never forget as long as time endures?
I have talks and fondness after their absence

Since they grew distant, I have tales of longing
More recent to erase while my eye waters them
I keep denying, while my eye recounts them.

How many a friend I have there, whose favors to me
Great favors and kind acts I have not repaid
are many, whose kindnesses I cannot repay.

I parted from him unwillingly, and what kept me company
Keeps me company, hiding me while I hide him
was longing for him that makes me vanish, while I conceal it.

After closeness, I contented myself with letters; then they ceased,
Until I was content with greetings in its margins
until I was content with a greeting in their margins.
If one less worthy than I surpasses me, no wonder

If someone without merit rises above me, that is no wonder:
He rises over the noble horses in their power
their dust rises above the fleetest horses.
And scum rises over the water oh and there is Saturn

Refuse floats above water; and behold Saturn,
Hiding the stars' light as he is elevated
the dimmest of the stars, yet highest among them.

Had fortune depended on effort, I would not have been outstripped
No band would have preceded me in its efforts
by a band whose endeavors fell short of mine.
My indifference brings no shame to my manners

My obscurity casts no shame upon my literary gifts;
Rather that is shame on the world and its people
rather, that shame falls on the world and its people.
