عَجباًhow wondrous لطيفكَat your phantom حينwhen أَسعفَhe came to aid موهِناlate at night
أَيُسىءُdoes he do harm بيto me وَيُزيلُand removes نَوميmy sleep مُحسِناًwhile doing good
How wondrous your phantom, when it came to my aid at night—
How wondrous your phantom, when he came to my aid late at night!
does it wrong me by banishing my sleep even as it shows me kindness?
Does he wrong me and dispel my sleep while doing me good?
وَيُسريand he journeys by night عَلىdespite هَولِthe terror الظَلامِof darkness الىto شَجٍone grief-stricken
لَوif لاnot يَئِنُّhe moans جَوىًin anguish لأَخفاهُwould surely conceal him الضَناwasting sickness
It journeys by night, through the terror of darkness, to a grief-stricken lover
And he journeys by night, despite the terror of darkness, to one grief-stricken,
whom wasting sickness would conceal, were his inner passion not to groan.
Were he not moaning in anguish, wasting sickness would conceal him.
لَمhave not أَنسَهُI forgotten him وَتَيقُظيand my waking يُوديputs an end بِهِto him
وَيَقولُand he says غيرwithout مُوَدِّعbidding farewell لاdo not تَنسَناforget us
I did not forget him, though my wakefulness destroys him,
I have not forgotten him, though my waking makes him vanish,
and, without bidding farewell, he says, “Do not forget us.”
And he says, without bidding farewell, 'Do not forget us.'

He brought his lips close, and I exclaimed in wonder:
He brought his lips close, and I said in wonder:
“He lied who claimed that a phantom was merely a thing wished for!”
'He lied who claimed the phantom was mere wishful thinking.'
لَمdid not تجلهِdrive him away سِنَةُdrowsiness الكَرىof sleep حَتّىuntil اِنجلَتit lifted
عَنّيfrom me عَلىdespite رُغميmy unwillingness فَودَّعَthen he bade farewell واِنثَنىand turned away
Sleep’s drowsiness had scarcely revealed him before it cleared
Sleep's drowsiness did not drive him away until it lifted
from me against my will; then he bade farewell and turned away.
From me, against my will; then he bade farewell and turned away.
بَذلَhe offered الوِصالَunion وَدونَهُand in its way قِصَرُthe shortness الكَرىof sleep
ثُمَّthen اِنثنَيتُI turned back وَدونَهُand barring access to him طولُthe length القَناof spears
He offered union, but the brevity of sleep stood in its way;
He offered union, but sleep's brevity barred the way;
then I turned toward it, though long spears barred the way.
Then I turned back, with long spears barring the way to him.

Will you pause, that I may voice my pain and thereby cool a heart
Will you pause, so I may complain and you may cool my heart,
you have inflamed and made your dwelling place?
Which you set ablaze and made a dwelling for yourself?

May my father ransom the one who said, “Arm yourself, against my avoidance,
May my father ransom him who said, 'Arm yourself against my shunning you
with patience—for no slight offense have I committed.”
With patience.' For I have committed no slight offense.

Of descriptions, nor were you at a loss for allusive names.'

More fitting than a clear description, and clearer still.

One unique in qualities cannot conceal whom he means.'

He said, “Allude to someone else in speaking of us.” I answered,
He said, 'Speak of us under another's name.' I answered him:
“My tongue has grown inarticulate concerning anyone but you.”
'My tongue has become inarticulate when speaking of anyone but you.'
