طَرفُeye المحبّthe lover مُوكَّلٌentrusted بِعَذابِهِwith his torment
لاdo not تَعذِلوهُrebuke him فَتأثمواand thus sin بِعِتابِهِby reproaching him
The lover's eye is entrusted with his torment.
The lover's eyes are burdened with his torment,
Do not reproach him, lest you sin by rebuking him.
Do not blame him, lest you incur his reproach.
كَبِدٌa liver تعاوَرهاrepeatedly assailed it الغَرامُpassion فَأَصبحتand it became
زَفَراتُهُhis sighs قَدalready تَرجَمَتhave expressed عَمّاabout what بِهِis within him
A liver repeatedly assailed by passion—so now
A liver worn by passion until it became
his sighs have revealed what ails him.
Its sighs have translated what ails it.
وَجرتand befell عليهِupon him نَوائِبٌcalamities مِنfrom دَهرِهِhis fate
وَأَشدُّهاand the harshest of them فيهfor him قِلىaversion أَحبابِهِhis loved ones
And his fate has brought calamities upon him;
Misfortunes from his fate have befallen him,
the harshest for him is his loved ones' aversion.
The most intense being the scarcity of his loved ones.
فَكأَنَّand so it is as though داعيةَthe urging of الهَوىlove فيin جِسمِهِhis body
سَيفٌa sword يُقَطِّعهcuts him apart بحدِّwith the edge of ذُبابِهِits point
And so the urge of love within his body seems
So the caller of love in his body
a sword that cuts him apart with its sharp tip.
Is like a sword that cuts him with its edge.
شابَتhas turned gray لِماfrom what تَلقاهُit encounters it قُذَّةُthe arrow-feather of صَبرِهِhis patience
وَغَرامُهُand his passion فيin عُنفُوانِthe prime of شَبابِهِits youth
The arrow-feather of his patience has grayed from what it faces,
His patience was depleted by what he endured
while his passion is in the prime of its youth.
And his passion in the prime of his youth.
لَمdid not تَستَهِلَّflow عَلىupon الخُدودِthe cheeks دُموعُهُhis tears
إِلّاexcept لِسَقمbecause of an illness دبَّcrept تَحتَbeneath ثِيابِهِhis garments
His tears have not streamed down his cheeks
His tears did not flow down his cheeks
except for an illness that crept beneath his garments.
Except due to the sickness that crept beneath his clothes.
وَتَنوفَةand a trackless wilderness أَنفقتI expended فيهاin it همةًresolve
راضَتmastered مِنthrough التَهذيبِdiscipline حَلَّthe resolving of صِعابهits difficulties
And in a trackless wilderness I expended resolve
And exertions in which he spent his zeal,
that, through discipline, mastered the solving of its hardships.
Pleased with the adornment that eased his difficulties.
أَكسبَتI gave فيهاin it القَلبthe heart عِلَّةan ailment of حُرقَةburning anguish
مُستأسِداًacting like a lion فاِختالَand then it swaggered فيin جِلبابِهِits cloak
There I gave the heart an ailment of burning anguish;
It earned for the heart an ailment of burning,
lionlike, it then swaggered in its cloak.
Lying down, so it changed in its wraps.
وَبَغيتand I sought للآمالfor hopes منهجa path رُشدهاtheir right guidance
فَمَضَتso they went on تُنافِسُvying فيin حَثيثswift طِلابِهِpursuit of it
And for hopes I sought a path to guide them aright;
It sought for hopes a path of righteousness,
so they went on, vying in swift pursuit of it.
So it went competing vigorously for its requests.
لاnot أَستَميحُI beg for الدَهرَTime سَيبَthe bounty of عَطائِهِits giving
كرماًout of nobility وَلاnor أَمتارُI obtain provisions وَبلَthe downpour of سَحابِهِits clouds
I do not beg Time for the bounty of its gifts,
I will not blame fate for limiting its gifts,
out of nobility, nor draw provisions from its clouds' downpour.
Neither will I gauge and measure its clouds.
وَجَعَلتُand I made صَبريmy patience مَعقِلاًa stronghold وانand even if اِغتَدىwent forth at dawn
صَرفُthe adversity of الزَمانِTime بظفرهwith its claw وَبنابهِand with its fang
And I made my patience a stronghold, even if
I made my patience a refuge, though the
Time's adversity went forth at dawn with its claw and fang.
Turning of time triumphed with its might against me.
