بِبابِat the gate of مُربَيطَرٍMurbaytar عايَنتُI beheld ذاpossessing عِظَةٍan admonition
هُوَit الجَمادُthe inanimate object وَلَكِنand yet صمتهُits silence يَعِظُadmonishes
At Murbaytar's gate I beheld something bearing a warning.
At the door of a ruined abode I spied a preacher
It is lifeless, yet its silence admonishes.
It was inanimate, yet its silence preached
يَقولُit says هذيthis بِلاديmy land قَدindeed فَتَحتُI opened بِهاin it
كَفِّيmy palm فَهَلso, are ...? أَنتَyou ياO مَغرورُdeluded one مُتَّعِظُtaking heed
It says: “This is my land; here I have opened
Saying, "This was my abode; in it I flourished.”
My palm—so will you, deluded one, take heed?
“Enough! Will you not take heed, O vainglorious man?”
هَذاthis مَقامِيَmy station وَالأَعصارُand the ages ماضِيَةٌpassing
وَالغَيُّand error لِلنّاسِto people مَحبوبٌbeloved إِذاwhen وُعِظواthey are admonished
This is my station, while the ages pass.
“This was my place, and the ages have passed away.”
And people cherish error when they are admonished.
“Vain pleasures tempt men, though they are exhorted.”
فَكَمso how often زَجَرتُI rebuked وَلَكِنand yet أَينَwhere مُزدَجِرٌone who desists
عَمّاfrom what أُحَذِّرُهُI warn him against وَأَينَand where مُتَّعِظُone who takes heed
So often have I rebuked—but where is one who desists
“How often have I warned, but where is a warner
From what I warn him against, and where is one who takes heed?”
Heeding my warning? Where is a man taking heed?”
