    They departed, and longing’s searing fire pitched camp.

    The day of parting is the lovers’ Day of Resurrection.

    Their waterskins ran dry, yet they paid them no heed,

    Trusting in the flow of my shed tears.

    They raised the shield of patience the moment they leveled

    The spearpoints of their eyes toward hearts.

    ما تَرتَجِي وَبِها أَبو إِسحاقِ

    Say to calamities: I have settled in Shuqura;

    What do you hope for, with Abu Ishaq there?

    فَإِنِ اِبتَغاها ما لَها مِن واقِ

    I have taken refuge in him who protected me from their harm;

    And if he pursues them, they have no protector.

    O sons of Hamushk, indeed your Ibrahim

    Gives life to those seeking bounty and slays destitution.

    أَنَّى لَهُم صَحوٌ وَأَنتَ السَّاقِي

    O you who pass round the cup of generosity, mankind has grown drunk;

    How can they sober up while you are the cupbearer?
