Beit Jala, Beit Jala.

She is a star that shimmers.

خبزُها .. كان صلاةً

ملحهُا .. كان إبتهالا

ملحهُا .. كان إبتهالا

Her bread was a prayer.

Her salt was a supplication.

في ظلالَِ الربِّ تغفو

في ظلالَِ الربِّ تغفو

تأبى .. لا تجفو الظلالا

تأبى .. لا تجفو الظلالا

In the Lord's shade she slumbers.

She refuses—she does not forsake the shade.

قنَعت تحيا .. بزُهدٍ

قنَعت تحيا .. بزُهدٍ

سعِدَت نفساً وحالا

سعِدَت نفساً وحالا

She was content to live in austerity.

She was happy in soul and circumstance.

قد حباها اللهُ زيتاً

قد حباها اللهُ زيتاً

لا سيوفاً أو نِبالا

لا سيوفاً أو نِبالا

God had bestowed oil upon her,

Not swords or arrows.

حولها الزيتونُ خصرٌ

حولها الزيتونُ خصرٌ

لوحةٌ تضفي جلالا

لوحةٌ تضفي جلالا

Around her, the olive trees form a waist,

A painting that lends majesty.

قرعت أجراسَ حبٍّ

قرعت أجراسَ حبٍّ

فأجابوها .. قتالا

فأجابوها .. قتالا

She rang bells of love,

So they answered her with battle.

حوصِرت من كلّ صوبٍ

حوصِرت من كلّ صوبٍ

تحتَ قصفٍ يتوالى

تحتَ قصفٍ يتوالى

She was besieged from every side,

Under continuing bombardment.

أفرغوا فيها رصاصاً

أفرغوا فيها رصاصاً

منعوا عنها الغلالا

منعوا عنها الغلالا

They poured bullets into her.

They withheld the harvests from her.

أفزعوا الأطفالَ ليلا

أفزعوا الأطفالَ ليلا

خلّفوا فيها ثكالى

خلّفوا فيها ثكالى

They terrified the children at night.

They left bereaved mothers within her.

أغرقوها في ظلامٍ

أغرقوها في ظلامٍ

شدّوا للموتِ حبالا

شدّوا للموتِ حبالا

They drowned her in darkness.

They pulled ropes taut for death.

صلبوها فوقَ نارٍ

صلبوها فوقَ نارٍ

غرزوا فيها النصالا

غرزوا فيها النصالا

They crucified her above a fire.

They thrust blades into her.

فأتى عيسى يُداوي

فأتى عيسى يُداوي

يحفزُ الناسَ إحتمالا

يحفزُ الناسَ إحتمالا

Then Jesus came to heal,

Urging the people to endure.

وأتى ظه يواسي

وأتى ظه يواسي

سوفَ يلقونَ وبالا

سوفَ يلقونَ وبالا

And [unclear word: ظه] came to console.

They will meet with calamity.

كلُّ غازي سوفَ يمضي

كلُّ غازي سوفَ يمضي

يلقى موتاً أو زوالا

يلقى موتاً أو زوالا

Every invader will depart,

Meeting death or extinction.

صمدت تنزفُ صبراً

صمدت تنزفُ صبراً

خرجت تهتفُ . لا . لا

خرجت تهتفُ . لا . لا

She stood firm, bleeding patience.

She came out chanting, “No! No!”

نارهم ردّت عليهم

نارهم ردّت عليهم

عارُهم صار مثالا

عارُهم صار مثالا

Their fire was turned back upon them.

Their disgrace became an example.

بقيت رغم جراحٍ

بقيت رغم جراحٍ

تتسامى .. تتعالى

تتسامى .. تتعالى

She remained despite her wounds.

She rises, she soars.

إنها قصةُ شعبٍ

إنها قصةُ شعبٍ

جسّدَتهُ بيتُ جالا

جسّدَتهُ بيتُ جالا

Indeed, she is the story of a people,

Whom Beit Jala embodied.
