    The full moon has appeared—what use, then, are lamps?

    Whoever beholds palm trees—would he gaze at wormwood?

    Whoever knows shade is not pleased by noonday heat,

    Or one who beholds beauty is not content with dissection.

    My body and my soul—a struggle that has begun to exhaust me.

    Shall I be tender to the body, or tender to the soul?

    ما ذا الوداعُ ولمْ تظفر بتلويح ِ ؟!

    They have bid you farewell, and yet from behind a tent;

    What farewell is this, when you have not received a wave?

    فاقنع بذاكَ ولا تطمعْ بتوضيح ِ

    They have bid you farewell in secret, within their hearts;

    So be content with that, and do not hope for clarification.

    In separation's keeping is a home where I have not forgotten

    Love's intimate whispers, nor the laments of anguish.

    In the wind's grasp are perfumed dreams.

    O you who restore the fragrance from the wind's grasp!
