O reliever of distress, affliction has touched me
O Reliever of afflictions: harm has befallen me
And troubled me—O reliever of distress.
And worried me.. O Reliever of afflictions
ضاقتْgrew narrow جهاتيmy directions فيin الحياةِlife ، وخِلتُنيand I thought myself
فيon رحلتيmy journey لاnot أستبينُI discern جهاتيmy bearings
My paths in life grew narrow, and I thought myself
My horizons in life have narrowed, and I am left
Unable to find my bearings on my journey.
Alone on my journey, unable to see my horizons
ضاعتْwere lost جهاتُdirections الأرضِthe earth إلاexcept وجهةًa direction
نحوَtoward السماءِheaven تَرودُهاseek it out عبَراتيmy tears
The earth's directions were lost, save one—
The horizons of the earth are lost except for one direction
Toward heaven, which my tears seek out.
Towards the sky, which my expressions head towards
وأناand I وحيدٌalone .. والظلامُand darkness يَلفّنيenvelops me
والنورُand light غادَرَhas departed ، وانطفتْand has gone out مِشكاتيmy lamp-niche
And I am alone, and darkness envelops me.
And I am alone.. And darkness envelops me
And light has departed, and my lamp-niche has gone dark.
And the light has departed, and my torches extinguished
وأناand I ونفسيand my soul فيon مسيرٍa journey مُرهقٍexhausting

And my soul and I are on an exhausting journey;
And I and my soul on an exhausting journey
Its steps have not made peace with mine.
Its steps have not matched my steps
وأناand I ونفسيand my soul فيin سِجالٍcontention دائمٍconstant
وأَحارُand I am bewildered بينbetween شَكاتِهاits complaint وand شكاتيmy complaint
And my soul and I are in constant contention;
And I and my soul in constant discord
And I am at a loss between its complaint and mine.
And I am confused between its complaints and my complaints

I do not know the extent of its tragedy;
I do not know the extent of its tragedies
Will it, I wonder, know the extent of my tragedy?
I wonder if it will know the extent of my tragedies?!
ياO نفسُsoul : رفقاًbe gentle ماnot أردتُI wanted سوىother than الهدىguidance

O soul, be gentle; I sought nothing but guidance.
O soul: gently, I wanted nothing but guidance
And tomorrow you will see the extent of the bliss to come.
And tomorrow you will see the extent of the coming bliss
حتىuntil متىwhen ياO نفسُsoul ، نبقىwe remain كالعِداlike enemies ؟
هاتيgive me العنانَthe reins إلىtoward المعارجthe paths of ascent ، هاتيgive me
How long, O soul, shall we remain like enemies?
How long, O soul, shall we remain like enemies?
Give me the reins to take the paths of ascent—give them to me!
Give me the reins to the ascents, give them to me
زادتْincreased جراحُwounds الدربِthe road حتىuntil أَعثرَتْcaused to stumble
خَطويmy steps ، فأهويso I plunge فيinto الظلامthe darkness العاتيfierce
The road's wounds increased until they made
The wounds of the road have increased until my
My steps falter, so I plunge into the fierce darkness.
Steps stumble, and I fall into the raging darkness
زادتْincreased همومُcares العمرِlife ، لكنْbut قُلتُهاI said it :
( اللهُGod أكبرُgreater ) ، ياO همومَcares حياتيmy life
Life's cares increased, but I said it:
The worries of life have increased, but I told them:
God is greater, O cares of my life!
(God is the Greatest), O worries of my life
