Am I a stranger—or are my times strange?!

And the astonishing question has bewildered my mind!

A stranger! How, when every ray

That has coursed through the sky is near to my eyes?

A stranger! How, when all beauty

In this existence is dear to my heart?

And how can I be a stranger, when around me

Are joy, light, melody, and fragrance?

A stranger! How, when around me are companions

Noble in character, and around me are hearts?

And I have hope, and above me a sky

That gives shade, and poetry, and fertile thought.

And how can I be a stranger, when my sun

Has remained through all time, never setting?

And all creatures prostrate with me

To my Lord; we answer His call, we respond to Him.

For the atoms of this existence answer His call,

And I would hear them, if the unseen grew transparent.

    أسبِّح جهراً ، وكُلّي ذنوبُ !

    They glorify Him in secret, without sin;

I glorify Him aloud, while I am all sin!

A stranger! How, when this is my path,

While another has fallen, led astray by the roads?

And how, when my road was begun by the Messenger,

Who leads hearts, so the hearts come alive?

    فؤادي يطيبُ ، وروحي تذوبُ

    When I prostrate, I commune with my God;

My heart is soothed, and my soul melts.

I live happily in the shade of intimate prayers,

So I pray, and I pray, and my Lord answers.

And my Lord is near, near, near.

So how can it be said that I am a stranger?!
