Eloquence fell silent, and my words bowed their heads.

And my tears streamed forth in bewilderment.

What has befallen my pen? I see it shackled!

It was once the master of words.

Others sleep, their eyes at peace, contented,

And I am at peace with sleeplessness—so give me more!

Give me more sleeplessness; through it my soul finds healing.

Give me more, O heart with clamorous beats!

They said: the stars of night hear my sigh.

So my sighs came one after another into the sky.

But they kept pouring forth their radiance

And beguiling the night's full moon with smiles.

I am alone; no companion remains to me

Except an image in the expanse of my mirror.

Alone here, no melody remains to me

Except my groaning, or the echo of my footsteps.

Have I engrossed my heart in the worlds of its own being,

Away from a world that never knew the essence of my qualities?

For I and my own self are in constant conflict

That will not end until my life ends.

All directions on earth were blocked, save one,

That shone before my heart with bliss to come.

So I prostrated myself before the Loving Creator, pouring out to Him

My distress; my lament grew long in prostration.

It was a prostration that flooded my life with radiance

And purity, and faith, and mercies.

It was a prostration that revived my soul's flowers,

So through it my blossoms wafted fragrance.

Indeed, visions hovered around me, kohl-eyed.

And did my prayer shape all this?!

What has befallen my pen? I see it perfumed

With religion—indeed, religion is the pulse of my life.
