Night has dozed off; let one emerge from the curtained chamber,

and from his lair let a wayward one and a limping one set forth.

And in the heedlessness of creation sunk in sleep,

the beast of the forest grew fierce, and a limping one roamed.

And the forest is only the roaming wolf's feeding ground,

to hunt the sanctuary's lambs or practice deceit.

So O homeland, whose guardians have slept, heedless of you,

may God help you through what your harsh foe is doing.

May God help you through what I have endured

of terror, when a cowering one frightened you in the night.

And O nation, whose homelands have been torn apart,

and where hatred has come to champion discord,

he saw her lion asleep in his mother's curtained chamber,

so the wayward, the treacherous, and the greedy ravaged her.

How, then, can he take matters in hand,

when horrors have overtaken him in the darkness?

He saw his collapsed palace beneath its rubble,

and crumbling wreckage destroyed by the cannons.

And around him his soldiers lay fallen and wounded,

and beneath them lay those desolate dwellings.

And invaders were mobilized, cutting off his path,

and impulses spring from them against people's honor.

And each has his own desire during the night's slumber,

stirring him to slaughter while the forest sleeps.

    بِهَا شَحَذَت أَيْد بِهَا الْسُّم نَاقِع

    Within it, the bearer of fang and knives grew fierce;

hands have sharpened them, and deadly poison lies upon them.

How strange my nation is in its leap

upon a homeland whose hearts are stricken with grief.

    بِهَا الْمَسْجِد الْأَقْصَى دَهَتْه الْمَوَاجِع

    Forces of sinful treachery have surrounded it;

through them, agony has struck the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

It has no defender in battle except the unarmed,

whom a deceiver terrifies in the heart of night.

He came bearing swift death with a machine,

    its fangs aimed at ribs.

And in its eyelids lie fires, hatred, and sorrow

for those it assails with death as it strikes,

with troops of outcasts from every creed

of thieves, with sinners and the greedy among them.

    فَمَن ذَا الَّذِي عَن قُدْسِه لَا يُدَافِع؟

    Their positions there define their crime;

so who is it that will not defend his Jerusalem?

Sorrow called to me and drew tears from my eye in anguish,

and the rending fangs lunged toward my heart.

Calamities and terrors, captives and tears,

and the slain and fallen, whom death has laid low.

Who, then, will save me from this devastation and what has happened

to my people and my home, while hearts are breaking?

And who will forcefully repel the brutish foe

and curb his efforts, while someone in the forest is afraid?

Souls beset by misery, worry, and wasting illness,

and terrified by the horror of what shares their bed.

Can homes be protected or mosques safeguarded

by a heavy sleeper, heedless of calamity, submissive and panic-stricken?

Or by one who grips the chair, clinging to it,

sleeping in humiliation, content with silence?

Rulers of peoples, torn apart by grudges,

and no bond has united them on the battlefield.

And their own selves have distracted them from their peoples,

and rancor spent the night wrestling alongside enmity.
