You have grown more ignorant, conceited one,

if you thought the matter easy.

    It was never submission,

    or terms dictated by you,

or for us to see settlements

    where our foe sought shelter.

You, deluded one, do not know

even a shadow of what peace means.

    Its spreading shade builds

    its lofty, overlooking edifice.

    Egypt seeks no peace

    that bows heads in humiliation.

    Egypt seeks a peace

blooming with roses and Arabian jasmine.

    لَيْس عَن حَق تْخَلِّي

    Its roses bear no thorns;

it is no surrender of a right.

    وَإِن مُتْنَا ظِلّا

    Our land is the honor for which we perish;

even if we die, it endures.

    We still possess might

and resolve that will not wane.

    Our land is no arena

where today we appease others with words.

A grain of sand is worth a life,

and in value it is dearer still.

O you who claim that we

    have tired of war—certainly not!

We were indeed born in it,

    since our past began.

    نُقْهَر الْخَصْم المُدَلا

    We are always the soldiers of the Arabs;

    we vanquish the arrogant foe.

Palestine does not belong to an aggressor

who dealt death to the seeker of peace.

    O you who deliberately kill

    my brothers, elder and child,

and the secluded maiden, my sister,

and make the mother taste bereavement:

I will not be made to forget my rights

by a usurper whose past is my slaughter.

    Terror has never availed

against one who sacrificed and proved his valor.

I, even if I sacrifice my life,

in my struggle will never weary.
