I beheld something of Umar al-Mukhtar in what they handed down

from him—and his descendants, whose rocket is a stone.

Those bearing upon their shoulders a flame

that annihilates the invaders and those who transgressed in their aggression.

    طِفْلٌ الْحِجَارَةِ فِيْهَا الْضَّيْغَمُ الْحَذَرَ

    I saw the heroes of Hittin mount meteors;

there, the child of stones is the wary lion.

    فِيْهَا الْكُمَاةُ لْجَيْشِ الْبَغْيُ قَدْ دَحَرُوْا

    At Ayn Jalut, the rebels made their leap;

there the armored warriors routed the army of oppression.

And in other battles, lion cubs leapt,

drawing inspiration for victory from the unseen; they did not fall short of it.

    لَهُمْ نِضَالٌ بِهِ الَّاجْيَالْ تَفْتَخِرُ

    I saw among them young rebels devoted to self-sacrifice;

theirs is a struggle in which generations take pride.

And among the battalions of Arab troops are brigades

of armored vehicles, with a longing deep within them.

As though they were forest lions; among their doves

are birds in flocks—they have hemmed the enemies in.

Their heroes—the leaps of victory unite them,

and they are thousands, with triumph at their right hands.

Or like eagles whose legions have fanned out,

destroying oppression, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.

    إِنَّ زَمْجَرَتْ نَارُهُمْ لَمْ يُعُرُّهُمْ خَوْرَ

    They have battlefields of valor by which they are known;

if their fire roars, no weakness besets them.

They ransom their homelands with the soul, making it erupt

as death upon a usurper or a band that betrayed.

    فِيْهَا الْفَخَارِ لِمَنْ فِيْ امَّتِيْ فَخَرُّوا

    Their faces are radiant like the horizon's lamp;

in them is glory for those in my nation who took pride.

Did Umar al-Mukhtar not teach them

the strength of will when reversals of fortune surround it?

I saw them in Jericho, then in their Gaza,

refusing to be subdued, while truth prevails.

And on Jerusalem's soil are lion cubs, accustomed

never to be deserted there by victory or triumph.

The rocks of the soil had come to their aid,

for they had vowed their souls to self-sacrifice.

    Fighters with experience in war,

before which white swords bow and the rocket self-destructs.

    Trained in knowledge and insight,

drawing valor from a sheikh endowed with vision.

He plans the great blow and aims it:

a flame of fire blazes against the enemies.

Maneuvering for combat or an assault,

he seeks to ensnare foes who rejected guidance.

    Its hurricanes arose—a roaring war,

seething with vengeance, whose sparks have not died out.

The battalions of Jerusalem, from Haifa to Nazareth,

to Tulkarm, triumph—they are the descendants.

How many a foe of mighty strength they destroyed,

and his aircraft, brought to ruin by the stone!

Has Umar al-Mukhtar not become their exemplar,

the Arabs' rebel in whom no weakness ever dwelt?

Did he not resist the Italians with confidence

for twenty years, pearls gleaming upon their neck?

How many miracles the hero al-Mukhtar wrought,

through which the ages of history continued to flourish!

How often God strengthened the resolve of the valiant through them

against the invaders, and the heroes of self-sacrifice were granted victory.

I say: O nation whose Mukhtar was astute,

he led the legions as they plunged into the thickets.

O our sheikh, O father of rebels in a homeland

where prophetic missions have left a trace of guidance.

Were you not a leader of the rebels against

the tyranny of despots, and from them came warnings to the foe?

O, would that we dwelt in the thickets, draped

with great trees scattered upon the Green Mountain.
