كتمتمُyou concealed هواكمُyour love والهوىwhile love يتكلمُspeaks
وخُنتُمand you betrayed فؤاداًa heart فيin الهوىlove يتألمُaches
You concealed your love, while love speaks.
You concealed your love, yet love itself does speak,
And you betrayed a heart that aches in love.
And you betrayed a heart in love that's torn and bleak,
وسلمتموُنيand you surrendered me للزمانto time يسوُمنيit torments me
وطابتand became pleasant منbecause of الأحداثِcalamities عنديto me جهنَمُHell
And you surrendered me to time, which torments me.
You left me to a time that's harsh and cold as stone,
And these calamities made Hell seem pleasant to me.
And joy in life for me is hellfire sewn.
وصيرتمونيand you made me فيin الهوىlove مثلlike منone who هوىfell
علىupon رأسهhis head للغائباتto the unseen يُسلمُis surrendered
And in love you made me like one who fell
You made me in love like one whose love is sold
Headfirst, surrendered to the unseen.
To absent ones, his head in misery bowed.
فلاso no لومblame ياO ياقلبيO my heart إذاif رُمْتْyou sought منone who غداhas begun
يُناديcalls out بِكبرwith arrogance أنthat وديmy affection مُحرمُforbidden
So no blame, O, O my heart, if you sought one who has begun
So do not blame me, oh my heart, if one day after this
To proclaim arrogantly that my affection is forbidden.
I call in sorrow that my love is now forbid.
ولاand no عجبwonder ياO قلبheart أنْthat ناحlamented طائرٍa bird
فقدfor indeed عاشlived عُمراًa lifetime بالهناin bliss يترنمُsinging melodiously
And no wonder, O heart, that a bird should lament,
No wonder, oh my heart, a bird cries out in pain,
For it lived a lifetime singing in bliss.
It lived its life here, twittering its sad refrain.
عليكَupon you صلاةًa prayer منfrom خليلٍa close friend مُجاملُcourteous
وكُلand every بناءstructure قدalready بنيتَyou built مُهدمُdemolished
A prayer for you from a courteous friend,
On you a prayer from one who shared in friendship tight,
And every structure you have built is demolished.
On castles you have built now destruction's blight.
وقدand indeed شاءتwilled الأيامthe days إظهارrevealing ماwhat جثاsettled
عليهupon it غُبارdust منfrom ودادaffection يُخيمُhangs over
And the days have willed to unveil what had gathered
The days have willed to show what's lain in dust concealed
Dust from an affection that hangs over it.
Of love that hovered gently and its warmth I've felt.
فياso O قلبheart لاdo not تجزعdespair لأولat the first خائنtraitor
يخونbetrays فؤاداًa heart بالإِخاءby brotherhood يُتيمُis enthralled
So, O heart, do not despair at the first traitor
So do not grieve, my heart, for the first traitor's sting,
Who betrays a heart enthralled by brotherly love.
Who betrays a heart that lived in brotherhood's ring.
فَكُنso be جَلداًsteadfast فالحادِثاتfor calamities تَمُرpass بيover me
وإنand even if صدٌَturned away عنيfrom me منone who غداbecame ليto me مُسلمُsubmissive
So be steadfast, for calamities pass over me,
Be steadfast - time washes sorrow tides away,
Even if one who had yielded to me turns away from me.
Though one I loved turns from me in scorn today.
ولاand do not تبكِweep هماًsorrow حينwhen تلقاهyou encounter it باكِراًearly
فإنfor indeed مآلthe fate الجاحدينthe ungrateful تندمُregret
And do not weep over sorrow when you encounter it early,
Weep not for grief that comes at dawn before the light,
For the fate of the ungrateful is regret.
For betrayers' fate at last is long regretful night.
ولاand do not تخشfear منof جورinjustice اللياليthe nights فإنهاfor they
تفورseethe إذاwhen كانis الصفاءserenity يُقلٌَمُis pruned
And do not fear the injustice of the nights, for they
Fear not the tyranny of passing nights that flow,
Seethe when serenity is pruned.
When calm is shattered storms must come and go.
وإنand if خفَتَyou feared يوماًone day منof شذوذٍan aberration يُصيبنيbefalls me
كَتمتI would conceal هوايmy love والهوىwhile love يتكلمُspeaks
And if one day you feared some aberration befalling me,
If dread of fickle days that bring me pain comes nigh,
I would conceal my love, while love speaks.
I'll hide my love, though love itself does speak and cry.
