Love for you dwells in a heart that was enamored of love.

Then will you not pity the heart, O finest cupbearer?

And you mock a heart as it yearns in ardent longing

For the love of one who has become bereft of love.

You will be called to account if you kindle a fire in a soul,

To put an end to one who used to weep through the nights.

So it is no wonder that I have come crawling to you,

To appease a heart that has grown unruly over you.

In love, you laid my cheeks underfoot,

So my beloved might enjoy trampling one who was in love.

And I have indeed sworn with every breath

That passes from the depths, that it shall reach one far away.

I have spent a lifetime lamenting in the darkness of night,

And in a gathering of people I conceal my passion.

Nor have I any power if a longing dwells within me,

Dying and reviving in the vast sea of my misery.

God is my help against a sickness that has burrowed into my breast.

God is my help if my heart spends the evening weeping.

Is there no mercy from the one I love to journey with me?

Is there no glance of love to wipe away my suffering?

Is there, then, any rescuer or protector from love?

For it had indeed heaped firmly rooted mountains upon me.

So if I die one day, there will be a breach in love,

And if I live an age, you will be love's judge.

Perhaps I have thus done justice to my love and his,

And I guide the one who had gone astray in love.
