صَبرتُ وصابرتَ وإني صابرُ

صَبرتُ وصابرتَ وإني صابرُ

لَعلَ الذي أهواه يوماً يُسامرُ

لَعلَ الذي أهواه يوماً يُسامرُ

I endured, and you persevered; I remain patient.

I have been patient, and you have been patient, and I am still patient,

Perhaps the one I love will one day keep me company by night.

Perhaps the one I love will one day become my companion,

ومن عجب أني أُقابلُ بالجفا

ومن عجب أني أُقابلُ بالجفا

وروحي رهن في يَدي من يُكابرُ

وروحي رهن في يَدي من يُكابرُ

And it is strange that I am met with coldness,

How strange that I meet cruelty with kindness,

While my soul is held hostage in the hands of one who will not yield.

While my soul is held captive by one who is stubborn.

ولومي على نفسي لأني أنا الذي

ولومي على نفسي لأني أنا الذي

رَميتُ بِنفسي حيثُ أولاها كاسرُ

رَميتُ بِنفسي حيثُ أولاها كاسرُ

And my blame falls on myself, for it was I who

I blame myself because it was I

Cast myself where a breaker bestowed [his attention] upon it.

Who threw myself where the unfaithful lies in wait.

ولما رأى حُبي له ليسَ هيناً

ولما رأى حُبي له ليسَ هيناً

تَمطى بِكُبرٍ أين منه المشاعرُ

تَمطى بِكُبرٍ أين منه المشاعرُ

And when he saw that my love for him was no slight thing,

And when he saw that my love was not insignificant,

He stretched himself in arrogance—how far feelings were from him!

He drew himself up in pride - where is his compassion?

تَروم عُلواً أنت أعلى من العُلى

تَروم عُلواً أنت أعلى من العُلى

وإني دوماً للهوى منكَ ساهرُ

وإني دوماً للهوى منكَ ساهرُ

You seek loftiness, yet you are higher than the heights.

You aspire to the heights, though you are above all heights,

And because of you, I am always wakeful with love.

While I am always wakeful, longing for you.

فَفتش فؤادي كي ترى لكَ ثانياً

فَفتش فؤادي كي ترى لكَ ثانياً

وإن لم تَجد أنت الحبيب المُناصرُ

وإن لم تَجد أنت الحبيب المُناصرُ

So search my heart to find another beside you;

So search my heart, that you may find another for yourself,

And if you find none, you are the beloved who lends support.

And if you do not, you are still the beloved protector.

فَعطفُكَ إحسان ولينُك جنةٍ

فَعطفُكَ إحسان ولينُك جنةٍ

وحُبُكَ روح أو فَهل أنت ناكرُ

وحُبُكَ روح أو فَهل أنت ناكرُ

For your tenderness is kindness, and your gentleness is paradise,

Your kindness is a blessing, your softness a paradise,

And your love is life's breath—or do you, then, deny it?

And your love is my soul - or are you a denier?

تَدلل فقد يَهناكَ قلب عهدته

تَدلل فقد يَهناكَ قلب عهدته

يميلُ إلى لُقياكَ لا منكَ نافرُ

يميلُ إلى لُقياكَ لا منكَ نافرُ

Be coy, for a heart you have known may gladden you,

Be gentle, for a heart that has been yours

It longs to meet you, not to flee from you.

Inclines always to meet you, not to flee you.
