And a woman asked, “Why is your body wasted,

And your gaze downcast, and your tears pouring?

Has a cloud lingered over you since our parting,

Of ill, raining down calamities that speak?

Or has time brought you low, after once being radiant,

And found delight in gatherings of mourning women?

Or has patience fled a heart I once knew,

Or has the wind veered where caravans have veered?”

So I said to her, “Neither that nor this, for I

Have remained true to my pledge, even if I am a failure.

Spare me these evasions, for rejection is deadly,

And delay brings me nothing but calamities.

Indeed, my bones have shown through from your coldness, and I have seen

From rejection, swarms of doubts—mighty legions.

And I forget worries that have grown immense,

And through the days, a truth and a concern remain.

    يُصَوّر  وضعي  بينها  وهوَ  ماثلُ

    And in dreams I read letters from you;

My condition is portrayed in them, there before me.

May my life ransom you, after my honor and my high standing,

Nor am I one to be stingy with my soul.

Take this much of a pledge: I will not divert my course

From love, even if someone comes to me offering compliments.”
