The physician felt my hand in ignorance, so you said to him:

Physician, leave my hand and look at my liver.

    For no medicines of yours can heal me today;

For love has weakened my heart, and my body has blazed.

Keep your medicine away from me; do not approach me,

For you know nothing of love and have been of no help.

You have wearied yourself over what you do not know,

And lost sight of the misery the breast contains.

Let me tell whoever has come seeking

Healing at your hands: 'Go back, and do not return.'

If they have fed you passion, or you have tasted their love,

You may see that the heart does not [cease?] for every hand.

And if you know nothing of passion and love, then go to

The encampments of gazelles from Bani Asad.

O student of medicine, look deeply into the heart; you will see

Within it love and hatred arising from misery.

So if you feel passion occupying wings

Of the heart, then say: 'Passion has weakened my endurance.'

Do not hate love, even if you see in it

What has split a heart and destroyed the liver's side.

You have given me everything I used to hear

From those who tried, in love, to restrain my hand.

Do not ever think passion and love a farce,

Nor a hostage to the spiteful and the envious.

So if you have suckled passion or inclined toward its side

Today, then look toward meeting it tomorrow.
