Ask the days about me, O sister of Joshua.

Ask the night and the dreams: have you visited my bed?

Ask everyone you meet walking upon the earth.

Ask the white camels and the desert about the torrent of my tears.

For I am captive to ardent longing and heartache,

Even if I should meet my death through my love for your love.

Stop and behold a heart that love tears apart.

And were it not for love of you, my ribs would not have come apart.

Spare me delay, my life; rather, look.

Nor have I received from you anything to delight my ear.

I have suffered from you what Qays of Amir suffered,

And you are Layla—oh, how great my anguish!

In love, I laid my heart as a place for you to tread.

And I washed your feet with my tears.

Do you not fear Time in killing one who now

Lives through love of you, no pretender to that love?

You want me to keep my torment in love,

And events toy with me at every turn.

And do not wonder that a veil has come over me,

For from you, and in you, I have known my aimless wandering.

So have pity on one who spends evening and morning in love,

Calling to you: O my soul, return to me.

Then, when she saw me, worry assailed her heart.

And she said: I thought today you would forget my place.

But, by the truth of love, I am not one to forget them:

Those brief hours of embrace, sipping from my tearful eyes.

So come, let us exchange worries for pleasure,

And expose whoever had been pretending in love.

And when we clasped hands and love embraced us,

I saw the eye's tears grieving for my tearful eye.

I gained affection from a beloved I had known,

And I called: O my gazelle, and O sister of Joshua!
