And a woman asked: Why is your gaze turned to the sky?
She asked, "Why is your gaze in the sky?
Is there anything there for you that resembles my face?
Do you have something there that resembles my appearance?"
فقُلتُthen I said بِهاin it بدرa full moon وحُسنكِand your beauty زانهadorned it
فَحسبُكَso enough for you تقوىreverence for اللهGod فيconcerning نصفhalf of مُهجتيmy soul
Then I said: A full moon is there, and your beauty has adorned it.
I said, "It has the full moon, and your beauty adorns it,
So let reverence for God suffice you concerning half my soul.
So suffice yourself with fearing God in half of my passion."
فراقَso it was pleasing لهاto her قوليmy words وخامرهاand pervaded her الهوىpassion

Then my words pleased her, and passion stole over her.
My words bid her farewell, and passion stirred her,
And she leaned upon my chest, wiping away my tear.
She leaned on my chest, wiping away my tears.

Then I said: Leave me where I was, for I
I said, "Leave me be where I was, for I
see the heart's beats hinting at my anguish.
See the pulses of my heart divulging my agony."
فقالتthen she said فدتكmay it ransom you الروحthe soul ياO خيرَbest of منthose who هوىhave loved

Then she said: May my soul ransom you, O best of those who have loved,
She said, "I ransom you my soul, O best of those loved,
and best of lovers; love is my wish.
And best of lovers, and my love is my end."

ولاand do not تكbe ممنamong those who ملَtired of حُبيmy love بِفرقتيthrough parting from me
Hold fast to the fringes of love in passion,
"Grasp the eyelids of love in passion,
and do not be among those who tire of my love when parted from me.
And do not be like those bored of my separation."

For in my heart you are salvation for someone drowning.
"For you are in my heart a rescue for one drowning,
So be mine, even before the day of my death.
So be mine even before the day I pass."

And in life you quench the thirst of my parched self,
"You see in life water for my thirst,
and to my soul you are like bliss, and you are my paradise.
And you are to my soul like bliss and my garden."
