O you who wound the lover’s heart by turning away,

Will you not recall the graceful sway of his form?

How often you complained of passion and inward anguish,

Until you attained the choicest sweetness of his cheek.

Have you forgotten that you are held in pledge within his heart?

He bestowed affection on you, and you held fast to his shelter.

Love is not merchandise that can be bought,

Nor something claimed by one who boasts of his toil.

No, my friend—you who are free of passion—

Turn your heart away from my love and its promise.

But if you fall in love and are worthy of love,

And love comes to you, do not think of rejecting it.

And if you seek repose from love,

Sheathe your weapon; do not boast of its edge.

And if you see rejection in a person’s heart,

Then know that you were never his equal.

And if what happens in love should happen to you,

Then draw back your passion—could you stand against it?

Forget the one who hurt you once, and go far

From one who wounds the lover’s heart by turning away.
