رمونيthey shot me بِسهمwith an arrow فيin صميمthe very core فؤاديof my heart
Doves of a pool, with a valley's gazelle,
A dove at the pond with a gazelle and valley
They struck me with an arrow in the very core of my heart.
They shot me with an arrow in the heart of my soul
جَلبنَthey brought هواناًhumiliation منfrom هواهُنtheir love للحشىto the heart's depths
وصيرننيand they made me بينamong الأرآئكthe couches شاديa singer
They brought humiliation from their love to my heart's depths,
They brought disgrace from their love to my heart
And made me a singer among the couches.
And made me among the cushions elated
وخضنand they plunged into غِمارthe depths الحُبِof love والحُبُand love شاهرbrandishing
لِقلبيagainst my heart سيفاًa sword كيso that يُزيلit might remove وِداديmy affection
And they plunged into love's depths, while love brandished
They entered the clouds of love and love unsheathed
A sword against my heart, to end my affection.
A sword to my heart to remove my affection
I forced myself to endure حتىuntil كُدتَI nearly بالصبرthrough patience أنتهيI come to an end
ويُنهينَand they end حُباًa love باكياًweeping ويُناديand it calls out
I forced myself to endure, until patience nearly ended me;
I was patient until almost exhausted by patience
And they end a love that weeps and calls out:
And they end a weeping love calling out
أماwill you not تَرحمونyou show mercy to الحُبlove والحُبُand love فيamong الورىhumankind
حياةlife لِمنfor one who فيin الحُبlove بعضa little رمادِash
Will you not pity love, when love among humankind
Do you not have mercy on love while love in life
Is life for one who, in love, is but a little ash?
Is the life for those who love some ashes
ترددنَthey hesitated منfrom خوفfear وعُدنَand they returned إلىto الوراthe rear
وقُلنَand they said منwho الشاكيthe complainer وأينَand where منادِa caller
They hesitated in fear and drew back,
They hesitated in fear and returned to the veil
And said: Who is complaining, and where is the caller?
And said who is the complainer and where is the caller
فقُلتُso I said وقدand already هزتhad shaken بيme الحُبlove والهوىand passion
أناI بينكمamong you لاnot أستملI grow weary of سُهاديmy sleeplessness
So I said, love and passion having shaken me:
So I said as love and passion shook me
I am among you; I do not tire of my sleeplessness.
I am among you I do not avoid my pillow
ضعونيplace me حيثُwherever شئتمyou wish لأنيbecause I فيamong الورىhumankind
عُبيدa little slave لِحبto love والمحبةُand affection زاديmy provisions
Place me wherever you wish, for among humankind I am
Put me wherever you wish for I am
A little slave to love, and affection is my sustenance.
A slave to love and love is my provision
شقيتُI suffered بِكُمbecause of you والشوقُand longing أصلُthe root of شقاوتيmy misery
وهمتَand I wandered ولاand not أدريI know لِمنfor whom أناI غاديsetting out
I have suffered because of you; longing is the root of my misery.
I suffered because of you and longing is the origin of my agony
And I wandered, not knowing for whom I was setting out.
And I thought and I do not know to whom I am going
وكُنتand I was كَمنlike one who أدلىlowered بدلوٍwith a bucket ليرتويto quench his thirst
فلامسَthen he touched ريحthe scent الماءof water منfrom قلبهhis heart الصاديthirsty
And I was like one who lowered a bucket to quench his thirst,
And I was like one who drew with a bucket to quench his thirst
Then, from his thirsty heart, he touched the scent of water.
But the wind touched the water from his pouring heart
عَتبتَI reproached علىagainst أمسيmy yesterday ويوميand my today وفيand in غدِtomorrow

I reproached my yesterday and my today; and tomorrow
You blamed my night, my day and tomorrow
I shall see the light of my eyes holding my reins.
I see the light of my eye withholding my rein
يقولونthey say هلاٌwhy not فقتَyou awoke منfrom سكرةthe intoxication الهوىof passion
ولاand not أنتyou ناسforgetting حُبناour love ومناديand calling out
They say: Why have you not awakened from passion's intoxication?
They say why don't you wake from the intoxication of passion
And you neither forget our love nor call out.
And are you not people our love and our caller
فقُلتُso I said أليسis it not الحُبlove قدalready قُدٌwas cut منfrom حشاthe heart's depths
وهلand is it possible لِفتىfor a young man يحياto live بِدونwithout فؤادِa heart
So I said: Has love not been cut from the heart's depths?
So I said is not love an arrow from arrows
And can a young man live without a heart?
And does the youth live without a heart
تَبسمنَthey smiled حتىuntil بانَbecame apparent كُلall تأسفٍregret
وقُلنَand they said عليناupon us وزرthe burden of guilt كلevery منادِcaller
They smiled until all regret became apparent,
They smiled until all sorrow appeared
And said: We bear the blame for every caller.
And said the guilt of every caller is upon us
بَعدناwe distanced هواناour love عنfrom هواكَyour love لأنناbecause we
خشيناwe feared بقاءthe persistence of الوصلunion بعدafter بِعادِseparation
We drew our love away from yours, because we
We distanced our disgrace from your love
Feared that union would endure after separation.
Fearing the remaining of union after separation
ولوand if أنناthat we ملناwe inclined لِحبكَtoward your love مرةٍonce
مكثناwe remained زماناًfor a time لنwill not ترىyou see لناfor us فاديa ransomer
And had we inclined toward your love even once,
And if we got bored of your love once
We would have remained awhile; you would see no one to ransom us.
We would have stayed for an era without a savior
