    Where are the fragrance and the blossoming dream?

    Is your love like this, O dark one?

    Do our blossoms wither like this,

    Though musk and ambergris once came from them?

    The sweet lip—what ails it?

    It brings me wine, yet does not intoxicate me.

    Our poems used to embroider the worlds,

    And the night was moonlit by our longings.

    How can love pass like the life of dew,

    While its green meadow lies in my homeland?

    يَخفُقُ فيها النّايُ والمِزْهَرُ

    I love you in a free song,

    In which the reed flute and the lute throb;

    يهفو إليها الكَرْمُ و البيْدرُ

    In dawn's appearance over the bend,

    Toward which the vineyard and threshing floor yearn;

    تَحْسُدُهُ على الهوى الأنهُرُ

    In the laughing river among the hills,

    Which the rivers envy for its love;

     صنوبرِ السفحِ ولا يهجُرُ

    In the nightingale's melody, as it sings upon

    The hillside's pines and never departs;

    على ذرى تاريخنا تخطرُ

    In the procession of victory and in a banner

    That sways proudly on the summits of our history;

    فيها المروءات وتستكبر

    And in my nation's hopes, where exult

    The noble virtues and grow proud;

    I love you in my people and in my homeland,

    For you are neither sweeter nor more radiant.
