Bid farewell to your shade, O doves of the valley.

Time has twisted your swaying branch.

After its spreading tree and its sweet, clear water,

Sleep in the midday heat, hungry and thirsty.

Send forth your lament, O doves, and tell us:

Have doves held sway in the valley's sanctuary?

And make the breeze weep, its sleeves dewy,

For weeping comes easily at parting.

The messenger to you had conquered longing,

Strutting over hills and over hollows,

Until, when he reached the dwellings, there welled up

His tears, and he recounted a heart's tale.

Fly in the open sky—and can a collared dove fly

Whose wings the hunter's hand has clipped?

O neighbors of the sorrowful valley, a greeting—

Red, given voice by the blood of livers.

It gropes for the past and sees its shadows

Behind the tears, upon the aggressor's blade-edges.

Brown lances once adorned its cloaks,

So the years remember the wonders of the cloaks.

What do you possess? Is there zeal in your souls?

Have the swords remained in their sheaths?

If there were zeal in those souls—

Arab zeal—the fetters would be tightened.

If in those noses any remnant remained,

The rings of enslavement would surely shatter.

If you heard the echo of the graves, you would find

Their sides weeping for the forefathers.

You loathed the lowly world when

They loathed a loathsome life and struggle.

And time trod upon them until, when

The fathers died, it trod upon the grandchildren.
